Online Journalism Structures – Chase Keller

Journalism has changed immensely as time has gone by. Through the rise of online journalism, there has never been more opportunities to enter the journalism field. Prior to online journalism, people relied on receiving their news and content through only print and broadcast media, but now people search for their news on websites, social media, and other forms. Traditional journalism is still relevant in today’s society, as newspaper writers and broadcast journalists still exist, but now some social media content creators and infographic designers can legitimately call themselves journalists.

Online journalism has absolutely shaped the way people receive their news as well. People can now consume news at any time, known as the 24/7 news cycle, instead of waiting for their local newspaper to be published or waiting for broadcasters to hop on the airwaves. News can be consumed immediately as it happens, primarily through social media and breaking news section on different websites. Convergence, which is the integration of different media forms on one digital platforms, and modular content, breaking down stories into smaller mediums for broader distribution, have also changed journalism significantly. News can now use different forms of multimedia to tell a story, whether that be through short TikTok videos, long-form YouTube videos, and more. Social media and digital journalism have also opened up more opportunities for people to give their own analysis. For example, if any large-scale sports news break, a content creator could not only report on the news but also give their own thoughts and opinions on that news.
