{"id":4,"date":"2020-03-10T23:45:05","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T23:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/brentleiterman\/?p=4"},"modified":"2020-03-10T23:45:05","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T23:45:05","slug":"city-council-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/brentleiterman\/2020\/03\/10\/city-council-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"City Council Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Library Annual Report<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The yearly numbers show that not only Irvin L Young Memorial Library, but all libraries in the surrounding counties are still viable and useful for its citizens.\u00a0 According to Irvin L. Young Memorial Library Director Stacey Lunsford: \u201cThere are still a lot of people who like print books, a lot of people who read magazines. We are seeing a trend of people going more to digital, but they\u2019re using it in addition to print. They just like to have all those options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last year, the Irvin L Young Memorial\nLibrary numbers have proved how important the library still is today.&nbsp; There were over 66,000 visitors and the\nlibrary has distributed out 6,700 library cards last year alone.&nbsp; The number of items checked out this last\nyear was also up to 122,111.&nbsp; Not\nsurprising, the amount of electronics was up as well.&nbsp; The amount of times the public laptops were\nused was up over 4,700.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some initiatives the Bridges Library system is\nlooking into, to improve the system, is a \u201cfine free\u201d system.&nbsp; The Bridges Library system has already\nimplemented a no fine policy for children collections.&nbsp; This has proved to be extremely successful\nand they are looking to expand it to adult collections as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Updates to the Irvin Young Memorial Library are\nplanned this year as well.&nbsp; The library\nis looking to expand its footprint. By getting rid of 7,000 collections, it\nwould allow for the library to get rid of some book racks, resulting in more\nroom for seating.&nbsp; The library wants to\ndo some maintenance updating with new lights and new carpet to update the aging\nlibrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chuck Nass receives Lifetime Achievement Award<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Chuck Nass was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Urban Forestry Committee.\u00a0 Chuck Nass was a board member for 12 years, with 10 of those years being the board president.\u00a0 Nass\u2019 work in the neighborhood and his work in forestry is well respected by everyone. Dwayne Sperber, a member of the Urban Forestry Council: &#8220;Chuck Nass has demonstrated true leadership. It was a very easy nomination to make. He\u2019s leaving quite a legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people take for granted the beauty of nature\nand the work Nass did to help maintain Whitewater\u2019s eye-appealing forestry. Jeff\nRoe, urban forestry team leader for the Wisconsin Department of Natural\nResources: \u201cTrees are everywhere. If you look around your city, they make\nbetter places to live. They bring in oxygen, beauty, economic value, stormwater\nmitigation \u2013 but mostly we just like them. They help give us a sense of place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Items:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\n&#8212; The Progress\nreport on the new Cravath Lakefront Park amphitheater was given and all is good\nnews. Eric Boettcher, the Parks and Recreation Directors spoke about the\nprogress of the amphitheater. Because of good weather the Amphitheater\nconstruction is ahead of schedule and new sponsors have been found as the fundraising\ncontinues with great success.<br>\n<br>\n&#8212; The\nWater Department is looking to purchase an automated valve turner machine,\nwhich includes a power vacuum. Brad Marquardt spoke about the issues with these\nvalves, often breaking or worse injuring employees. The Water department is\nlooking to purchase the Jet Vac Environmental for $63,560.<br>\n<br>\n&#8212; The\nPolice Department filed for an application for a federal grant. This grant would\nallow for the hiring of a full-time school resource officer.&nbsp; The increase in calls for services in local\nschools have increased to nearly double from last year.&nbsp; If this grant is given there will be a\nresource officer designated for the Whitewater High School and one more officer\nfor the remaining 5 schools.&nbsp; This will\nallow for officers to be proactive, rather than reactive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Library Annual Report &#8211; The yearly numbers show that not only Irvin L Young Memorial Library, but all libraries in the surrounding counties are still viable and useful for its citizens.\u00a0 According to Irvin L.
