{"id":67,"date":"2018-04-10T21:27:27","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T21:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/bigeliblogs\/?p=67"},"modified":"2018-04-10T21:27:27","modified_gmt":"2018-04-10T21:27:27","slug":"the-biggest-upset-in-ovc-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/bigeliblogs\/2018\/04\/10\/the-biggest-upset-in-ovc-history\/","title":{"rendered":"THE BIGGEST UPSET IN OVC HISTORY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/bigeliblogs\/files\/2018\/04\/10APeay_w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-68\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/bigeliblogs\/files\/2018\/04\/10APeay_w.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By: Elijah Banyard Johnson<\/p>\n<p>In a game for the ages, the battle of David vs Goliath was decided today in the Ohio Valley Women\u2019s Conference championship game.<\/p>\n<p>David, the Austin Peay State lady Governors, a young, scrappy, and relentless group who was placed as the fifth seed in the Ohio Valley Conference championship tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Goliath, the consistent and always competitive Eastern Illinois lady Panthers who represented the #1 seed in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Being the low seed, Austin Peay had to defeat a talented No. 4 seeded Morehead State in the first round, and defending conference tournament champion No.1 seeded Murray State in the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>The panthers initially beat the lady governors twice during the regular season, so this game almost felt routine to go in Eastern Illinois favor.<\/p>\n<p>Led by sophomore guard Ashley Herring (Memphis, Tennessee \/ Bartlett) who had a team high 21 points, she didn\u2019t want to make this a three to nothing series sweep.<\/p>\n<p>They kept fighting, that&#8217;s what they do,&#8221; said Austin Peay coach Carrie Daniels.<\/p>\n<p>Tough defense from both teams made it hard shooting as the lady govs went 24 for 66 (36%) shooting from the field. While the panthers shot 26-58 (45%) from the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t our day. They made more plays than us\u201d said Eastern Illinois senior forward Lindsey Kluempers.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately ending in double overtime, the final score was 69-65 as David vanquished Goliath in a spectacular championship game finale.<\/p>\n<p>Austin Peay will now advance to the women\u2019s NCAA college basketball tournament. While the panthers may be selected to play in the National Invitational Tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody thought we\u2019d be here. We had confidence.
