Optimist Club 2015-16, week of August 8, 2016

Uncategorized No Comments

Greetings Optimists,

The Exec Board will be meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, August 9 at 12 Noon. Let me know if you have any agenda items you would like to add.

Our next general member meeting will be next week, Tuesday August 16 at 12 Noon, in UC 261. Our speaker with be Traci Wilson, updating us about W3 (Working for Whitewater’s Wellness).

Current events needing helpers:

NFL “FUND CRAZR” RAFFLE TICKETS!! We are now selling the final 13 of 200 total tickets for this year’s NFL Fund Crazr raffle.  Please return any money for sold tickets, ticket stubs, and any unsold tickets to me by August 18!  If you can’t sell all the tickets you presently have, I will be able to give them to other club members who have “sold out” their own set(s) of tickets. All sold ticket stubs and unsold tickets must be returned to the SWIS District before August 28. Selling 200 tickets will probably net the club $2,400. If you haven’t bought one for yourself yet, contact me to do so. There are about 10 club members who could simply buy one ticket each and we would be out of tickets.

Warhawk Football Ticket Taking. There are still some time slot needing workers. If you have trouble entering your name, let me know and I’ll help.

Do you have a topic you would like to present to the club? Do you know someone who could speak to the club. Job related? Travel related? Sports related? Youth related? Let me know if you, or someone you know, would like to present. See the dates below where we need speakers.

  • August 16, 12:00pm, speaker will be Tracy Wilson re: What W3 is doing.
  • August 21, “Golf Fore! Whitewater Kids” to support various programs through Whitewater Unified School District.

Greetings Optimist!!

Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29, will be the annual Installation Banquet!! Social hour begins at 5pm at 841 Brew House.

At last week’s meeting, we had one business topic, voting on the “Slate of Officers” for 2016-17. Those in attendance voted unanimously in favor of the slate of officer put forward from the board and emailed to all of you last week. Combined with the votes emailed back to Jeanine before the meeting, we have an Executive Board for 2015-16!!!!!

I’m working with the incoming Exec Board members to confirm our monthly board meeting. At this time it looks like the 2nd Tuesday of each month, starting at 12 Noon, will continue to be our meeting time. Please remember that any club member can submit an agenda item.

I’ll keep you posted this week whether or not we have an general member meeting or board meeting next week, October 6. There might be a possible conflict with a campus Faculty Emeriti event that might draw away quite a number of our regular Tuesday members.

Who can help find speakers for our October and November meetings? All speaker ideas are welcome and appreciated.

Be sure to check the “Photos” page here on the web site for new photos posted today. You’ll also be able to find them on our Facebook page.

Our Facebook page reached 100 “Likes” last week!! The pictures that were added last week have been quite popular also.

Any Football Raffle Crazr winners last week?

Greetings Optimist!!

The Packers won, the Badgers won, and the Warhawks won their respective football games this past weekend. No wonder the sun was shining today!! (Repeated from last Monday’s message, may it continue!)

Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 22, WILL BE a regular club meeting day. One business topic is voting on the “Slate of Officers” for 2016-17. Hopefully all of you received and reviewed the emails from Jeanine Fassl about voting. In addition, we will honor our Youth of the Month from Whitewater High School. Our speakers will be Lauren Hageman, outgoing Club Intern, Allison Langenkamp and Callie Watry, fall semester club interns, speaking about what they learned (Lauren) and what they will be doing and hope to learn (Allison & Callie). We will also likely be hosting 4-5 potential new club members!! Please come and join us in UC 261 for the meeting at 12 Noon. Lunch will be from UW-W Catering. Lunch cost is $7.00 each.

Once the executive board is approved for 2016-17, they will establish their monthly meeting dates and times. Once those dates are known, we’ll let all club members know in case you have any business items for board consideration.

The Trivia Night 2016 committee continues to meet regularly. Kim Adams will provide an update at our meeting tomorrow.

I have begun working with one of the fall semester interns, Allison, to provide more messages per week about our club and its work. These new, additional messages will be posted on the web site and then automatically reposted on the Facebook page. One of the first things Allison pointed out to me was the lack of a new member application link on our web site. I fixed that! If you look at our web page, you will find a link on the right hand side labeled “Membership Application Brochure.” If potential new members (or you) click this link, it will open the document from the Optimist International web site that includes an application for membership. Changes and updates such as this will enhance our web site and Facebook sites and hopefully get our message out to more people. I’m looking forward to more ideas such as this from Allison and Callie this fall.

Our Facebook page has 98 “Likes” now, 1 more than last week.

Dates for upcoming club meetings and events include:

  • Tuesday, September, 29, Installation banquet at 841 Brew House. Social hour begins at 5pm. Dinner begins at 6pm.
  • Tuesday, October 6, noon meeting.
  • Tuesday, October 20, noon meeting. Youth of the Month from Whitewater Middle School.
  • Tuesday, October 27 evening meeting/social event at the home of Kim Adams and Angie Alesci.

That’s all for the moment.

Greetings Optimist!!

Hope everyone is doing well this week!!

We had a nice turnout last Tuesday for our first meeting of August. Our speaker was Warhawk Football Head Coach Kevin Bullis and I think he left us feeling very positive about the path and direction of the program and the upcoming Warhawk football season.

Connie Murray and Teshona Bennett volunteered to help with the upcoming End-of-Year Banquet (or should we call it the Beginning-of-the-Year banquet?) Anyway, it would probably help to have one more person assist with planning. Please contact me if you can be that “one more person.”

It’s customary at the Annual Banquet to introduce/induct the next Exec Board. With that in mind, it’s time to organize the slate of officers for 2015-16. At this time no one has yet volunteered for any of the exec board positions. Can you volunteer for an Exec Board position? Perhaps one that you’ve not held in the past? Please consider volunteering to be an officer for 2015-16. “Many hands make light work.”

This week there is NO GENERAL CLUB MEETING. However, the Exec Board will hold its August meeting tomorrow at 12 Noon in UC 260. If anyone has any items for me to include in the agenda please contact me ASAP.

The next SWIS District meeting is this week, August 14 & 15 in Brookfield, WI. The general meeting is Saturday, the 15th, from 9:00-3:30pm. If anyone is interested in attending let me know.

In other Optimist business:

  • I could use help contacting possible speakers for the next 2-3 months. If you have speaker ideas or would be willing to make calls for the club, please let me know.
  • Our Facebook page still has 92 “Likes!” So close to 100. Check the new cover photo with a picture of Al Hutchinson at the Fishing Derby.

Speakers for upcoming meetings are:

  • Tuesday, August 18, 12 Noon-1pm. Any ideas?
  • Tuesday, September 8, Esker Hall room 119, 12 Noon-1pm. Any ideas?
  • Tuesday, September 22, UC 261, 12 Noon-1pm. Any ideas?

Dates for upcoming club meetings and events include:

  • Tuesday, August 18, 12 Noon-1pm, location to be determined.
  • Tuesday, September 8, Esker Hall room 119, 12 Noon-1pm, “bring your own lunch.”
  • Tuesday, September 22, UC 261, 12 Noon-1pm. Catered lunch and Youth of the Month.
  • Tuesday, September, 29, evening banquet, date/time/location to be determined.

That’s all for the moment.

NO GENERAL CLUB MEETING THIS WEEK!! However, there will be a Board meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12 at 12 Noon in the University Center, room 260 (the usual Board meeting location).

Remember, this Thursday, May 14 there will be a “going away” party at the Whitewater Country Club for Denise and Kevin Kaminski!! Hope many of you can make it to thank Denise for her years of service to the club and participation on the board.

On to other Optimist business:

  • The Club is looking for new co-chairs for the upcoming Gyro Stand. Who can help Duane and Barb Dickens with the arrangements and scheduling for this coming July? Please contact Duane or Barb directly or let me know if you would like to co-chair this event. It’s very important for the Club!!!!  I can provide a copy of the event planning guidelines that Duane has written if that would help you make up your mind.
  • What would YOU like to do next year to contribute? It’s that time of the Optimist Club year to begin thinking about a slate of officers for 2015-16. How about an Exec Board position? Perhaps one that you’ve not held  in the past? Please begin thinking about volunteering to be an officer for 2015-16. “Many hands make light work.”
  • I have updated the web site to include a posting and links about the 11th Annual City-wide Rummage Sale on May 16. Click for the information flyer and application.

Week 51, Optimist Club

Uncategorized No Comments

Good Evening, Optimists (even though it is after midnight)!

As I wind down from this beautiful weekend, I close this chapter of weekly Optimist emails. I do so with gratitude for the past twelve months and great enthusiasm for the next year.

First—gratitude for your dedication to our cub and to the youth of our community. Together, we have dedicated hundreds of hours to our group’s purpose–and to bringing smiles to many faces.

Second—enthusiasm for the possibilities we have for greater service for 2014-15.

I want to thank our small planning group and ALL of our members who helped with the “Back to School Rally”/NOW Meeting at the high school. It was a great success this past Wednesday. Six applications have resulted from the meeting. It is exciting to add all of these new members to our club. I have copied those who have turned in applications and those who committed to turning in applications very soon.

I am also excited that our club has two hard working and talented student interns (Alix and Amanda) who will assist our club this fall semester. They will be joining us for the banquet.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our installation banquet this Tuesday at the Cold Spring Inn. This is a reminder that the social begins at 5:30pm and the dinner and program will start at 6:00pm. Governor Elect Jeff Kuchenbecker will also be joining us.

We will have a noon meeting on Tuesday, October 7 in UC 259A. Please bring your own lunch. There will not be a club meeting the second week in October. On October 21, we will again have a noon meeting (which will be a Youth of the Month meeting). Lunch will be provided on this day. From here, our new president–Dave Halbach will be in touch!

For now, I will sign off…

With gratitude and Optimism,

Kim 
