UW-Whitewater Collegiate DECA caps record year

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Collegiate DECA student organization excelled at the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California, on April 26-29, making this one of the most successful years in the chapter’s history.

A record 25 UW-Whitewater Collegiate DECA students qualified for the International Career Development Conference, where they earned 58 awards.

Among more than 1,600 collegiate competitors from across the United States, Canada and China, UW-Whitewater DECA earned 58 individual or team awards. Fifteen UW-Whitewater students advanced to event finals and 12 of these placed in the top 10 in the world in their categories. Earning especially high honors, Emilia Hickey earned third place in the Management Institute Competition, and the team of Nick Herzberg, Emily Hayden and Alex Zalewski won second place in the Entrepreneurship Challenge.

Many hours of practice and preparation were spent during the months leading up to the event. UW-Whitewater DECA’s board members started the academic year with the aggressive goal of qualifying 25 students for ICDC — the largest group in the chapter’s history — which they achieved.

Junior marketing major Will Kloiber, who received a Chapter Leadership Award, explained, “Our path to success began with prepping at general member meetings, then competing at regional and state levels. Both general members and the executive board put in countless hours. Whether it meant waking up before daybreak or practicing late into the night, our members proved that DECA is all about what you put into it.”

Nick Herzberg, also a junior marketing major recognized with a Chapter Leadership Award, agreed, “This year’s conference was great — not just because of an awesome location — but because our hard work and time spent practicing case studies made the competition a huge success.”

As a result, the team was also honored with a number of awards recognizing year-round engagement and leadership. The chapter received the Presidential Level Chapter Leadership Passport Award — the highest level of national recognition — for the third year in a row. Also for the third year in a row, UW-Whitewater DECA earned the Chapter Community Service Award for its community service efforts throughout the year. In addition, 20 students earned individual Passport Awards.

Frank Lanko, senior business career adviser and chapter adviser to UW-Whitewater DECA shared, “From the success we enjoyed at the state conference to helping lead the State of Wisconsin to the largest delegation of competitors at ICDC, our students have had a terrific year. We are proud to represent UW-Whitewater and the College of Business and Economics, and we look forward to continuing our success next year.”

Collegiate DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in colleges around the globe. Student members leverage their DECA experiences to become academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible and experienced leaders.
