Meet Your Faculty – Ms. Sara Deschner

Department:      ITSCM (Information Technology and Supply Chain Management)

What was your favorite subject in school & why?

I had two favorite subjects — math and history. I liked the structure of math and the ability to have a discrete solution to difficult problems.  History was enjoyable for me for the converse reasons – it provided a forum for analysis and debate on topics that weren’t concrete.

What was your least favorite subject in school & why?

My least favorite subject was art – I have NO artistic talent!!

What were you doing before you came to Whitewater?

I worked for a manufacturing company in southeast Wisconsin for almost 10 years in both Information Technologies and Supply Chain.

What made you want to teach?

I have always wanted to teach.  Originally I had thought about teaching history at the college level.  I decided not to pursue my doctoral degree in history and “fell” into the Information Technology field.  I am very happy that I ended up finding my way back to the classroom, and with a subject that I find exciting and dynamic.

What professional experience do you bring into the classroom?

I have over 10 years of management experience in Information Technology, and I try to supplement my knowledge with working on IT projects to keep my skills up-to-date.

What do you like to do outside of the College of Business & Economics?

Lots of things!  I enjoy lots of outdoor activities, travel and my husband, son and I attend quite a few concerts.  I’m game for anything that involves my family and friends.

What is something that students would be surprised to learn about you?

Take your pick:  I had a summer internship at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History during college, and as a part of one of my first IT jobs, I also had to teach people how to fuel and de-ice aircraft.

What is something about teaching that was unexpected when you first began?

I knew I would enjoy teaching, but I didn’t realize how energizing it is to work with students on a daily basis.  I am fortunate to have most of my students for multiple courses, and watching students develop and choose their career paths is very rewarding for me.
