5 Question Fridays: International Travel with Laura Schoenike

We had a little glitch posting on Friday however, here’s our next edition of 5 Question Fridays!

We sat down with Laura Schoenike to learn more about her experiences with International Travel and how that contributes to her plans for the future!

Name: Laura Schoenike

Major: Business and Marketing Education

Minor: Dance

Anticipated Graduation: May 2015

1.    As a freshman, you have already traveled out of country multiple times.  What is your favorite part of traveling and how does it prepare you for your future career?

I’ve always been a firm believe that it’s not where you go in life or what you have, but who you’re with. Considering this, travel and life in general for me has always been about the relationships I build. When I was really young I didn’t understand the concept that you only get to live life once, so now I have this addiction to meeting new people as well as hearing their stories and learning about their customs and culture.

2.    What was your biggest culture shock from traveling and how did it change your perspective?

Throughout my travels, I have made quite a few cultural mistakes and obviously learned a lot, but overall I’ve learned that when the life you’re living seems totally different, it can be really easy to forget how much is the same. No matter where you travel in the world, people are still people: Laughter knows no language, and a smile can speak volumes. Acceptance and love are always the two most important things for me, and if you bring your optimism and divinely true self, there’s usually plenty to go around.

One really profound example of this was learning that the term ‘family’ does not necessarily have to mean having a biological connection, because I know for certain that my Japanese host Azumi and I are sisters and, to use her terminology, “forever friends”. We would smile and laugh and steal food off of each other’s plates (I ate her tomatoes, she ate my hard boiled eggs); we would ride the escalators for entertainment at the train station for literally hours on end and spend late nights and early mornings talking while watching re-runs of Korean dramas or The Amazing Race. Even though I no longer have the pleasure of waking up to her smiling face literally inches above my nose in our low-ceiling bedroom, we are connected. I know that we will always be together, because after all, we are “forever friends”, and forever has no end.

3.    What advice do you have for students wanting to traveling or study abroad?

Do it! Talk to an adviser, go visit Global Ed, or even just get online and do some research. There are millions of unique opportunities out there, but you have to make it happen. Take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way because every moment you have is a once in a lifetime experience, and it’s totally up to you how you make the most of those moments.

4.    What was your favorite learning experience from Ecuador?

By far, my favorite experience in Ecuador was working with the students at Yachana Technical High School in the Amazon. As a future business teacher, I really loved seeing that even in a remote jungle school, there is still a need for business classes and technology proficiency. I also thoroughly enjoyed being able to participate in a picture scavenger hunt with some of the students. It’s amazing how well you can get to know someone without even speaking the same language!

5.    If you could travel anywhere in the world that you haven’t already traveled, where would it be and why?

The ongoing joke in my family is that at some point I’ll want to head to Mars, but Africa is definitely on the top of my bucket list as well. For me, traveling and service seem to go hand in hand, and I would love the chance to work with under-privileged youth in an impoverished nation. The dance culture of Africa also completely fascinates me, and I’ve always wanted to live “in the wild”, so what better place than amongst giraffes and elephants!

5 Question Fridays: Jay Craggs

UC Facilities Coordinator, Jay Craggs, has a very unique background.  Here’s what we learned from chatting with him for our 5 Question Fridays series.

1.  Prior to being the UC Facilities Coordinator you worked with many musicians on and off stage.  Who was your favorite and why?
I’ve been very fortunate to interact with quite a few really amazing musicians.  A couple of them were my heroes when I was a kid, particularly guitarist Alan Holdsworth.  He has always been one of my favorite musicians – an absolutely ridiculous guitarist – and I’ve been fortunate to meet him several times over the years.   In the early 90’s the British band “Level 42” was auditioning guitar players to replace their guitarist.  I had spent some time with the engineer for the Talking Heads and he recommended me for the gig.  As it turned out Alan got the gig and toured and recorded with the band on the “Guaranteed” album.  As much as getting that gig would have been perfect for me, it honestly didn’t bother me too much  – I was very flattered to even be on the same list as Holdsworth!

2.  In your biography on the UW-W staff website, it says you were nominated for an International Emmy.  Can you tell us a little about that?
That was for recording and production work.  I recorded, mixed, and mastered several songs for keyboardist Codrut Birsan for the sound track of an HBO Romania film “The World According to Ion B”.   The film producers liked the material and used some of the songs in the movie, which ended up being the 2010 International Emmy Award winner in the Arts Programming category.

3. Besides performing, you teach and have taught at many different schools. What do you enjoy about teaching?
I really enjoy seeing the “light” go one when a student reaches a new understanding of a concept.  Sometimes you can actually see the transformation when a person “gets it” – it is a lot of fun to see happen.  Teaching, developing curriculum, etc at the college level also helps keep me on top on my own game, it’s good for me personally on several levels.

4. What advice do you have for students who are interested in music?
I guess my answer would vary a bit depending on what segment of the business you’re in – pop, classical, jazz, performance art, etc.  But in general the music and entertainment business is extremely convoluted, the truth is that musical excellence is often not really valued or rewarded to the level that I wish it was.  Many talented writers and musicians in the commercial world agonize over what they need to do to be the “next big thing”, ie whether to wear a sparkly glove, learn dance moves, wear a meat dress etc – to me that stuff has nothing to do with music.  My 2 cents is to follow your heart, practice constantly to improve your skills, perform every chance you get, promote yourself like crazy, and hope for the best.  At the end of the day you can at least be proud of your work, and you aren’t stuck with a bunch of ridiculous costumes…

5. What do you find rewarding about your job as the Facilities Coordinator at the James R. Connor University Center?
I really enjoy the higher ed environment, it’s fun to work with students in that atmosphere and hopefully be a positive influence on their growth.  I really appreciate bright young minds – it gives me hope for the future!

5 Question Fridays with Elvisa Pasic

In this weeks “5 Question Fridays” we chat with Elvisa Pasic.  Elvisa is very involved on campus and shares with us how this has prepared her for her future.

Name: Elvisa Pasic

Major: International Studies with an emphasis in Public Diplomacy

Minor:Forensics Science and Criminal Justice

Expected Date of Graduation: May 2012

Where were you born?

I was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where I lived most of my childhood except during the 4 years of the war we were forced out of the city and had to live in the suburbs of Sarajevo.

What was the difficult transition when coming to the United States?

In November of 2002 I moved to Neenah, Wisconsin with my mom and brother.  Although there were a lot of differences between Sarajevo and Neenah I would say the lack of culture familiarity and language would be the two most difficult transitions. I was in 7th grade at that time, spoke no English, and was living in a small town of Neenah. I will never forget the first day of school, people tried talking to me and all I could do is smile and node, I had no idea what they were saying. I would go home and cry to my mom begging her to take us home. As I realized there is no going back I had no choice but to learn English. I attended English Second Language program, I went to the public library, rented children’s books, read and tried teaching myself the basics. It was difficult getting use to fast past life, having to have a car in order to get anywhere was also much different as back home we were getting around by trains, busses and taxis. It was strange to look out of my window and see no one out on the streets just cars zooming by, where in Sarajevo there are small cafes and markets all over the place, people were constantly out on the streets, taking walks and going places.

Why did you choose to come to UW-Whitewater?

I attended Neenah High School and our college adviser suggested UW-Whitewater as I was interested in studying International Business with a minor in Arabic. Shortly after coming to UW-Whitewater I found out that UWW has a perfect program for me so I switched my major to International Studies with an emphasis in Public Diplomacy and double minor in Forensics Science and Criminal Justice. I came to Whitewater for a visit and fell in love, people were so friendly, campus seemed the perfect size to accomplish my studies and the list of involvement possibilities was great. I also wanted to attend college in a smaller town as I was afraid I would get too distracted if I went to a bigger city as I would want to try and live Sarajevo life style.

Please describe your involvement on campus.

My first semester at UW-Whitewater was fall of 2008, that same fall I joined Sigma Sigma Sigma, National Sorority on campus. In spring of 2009 I moved into the Sorority house as elected House Manager and served for five semesters. Also that spring I was the Entertainment Intern for Student Entertainment Awareness League (SEAL). Following fall I was on the Special Event Crew and a head delegate for Panhellenic Council on which I served for three semesters. Spring of 2010 I became the Crew Chief of the Special Event Crew, as well as joined the Whitewater Student Government as the off campus Senator. In fall of 2010 I became the Academic Affairs Director for Whitewater Student Government and the Greek/Leadership Intern for SEAL. In fall of 2011 I was still on Special Event Crew, still the Greek/Leadership Intern for SEAL and also became the University Center Building Manager. In spring of 2012 I became the first female lead building manager for the UC.

How will your campus experiences help prepare you for your future?

My campus involvement has made me grow so much as a person and as a leader; my involvements have taught me how to work with all kinds of different people. I have had a chance to work with many students; faculty and staff from different backgrounds which helped me create a great networking group. My patience, understandings of peoples’ actions, time management, event planning, communication skills, commitment and responsibility have improved drastically thanks to my involvements.
