It’s Earth Week!! The week we all recognize and observe the natural beauty of this planet we live on.

Here at the UC we strive to be green by using rain barrels, which is a way to collect water sustainably.  The UC uses efficient electronics such as energy-efficient TVs and LED lighting. There is also a place #intheUC where you can recycle batteries, printer cartridges, cell phones, and media.

Ways you can “Go Green” include practicing conscious printing. Make sure you preview your work, print double-sided when possible, and print in color only when absolutely necessary.  Take advantage of reusable water bottles (by drinking delicious lemon-cucumber water!).

Unplug those cell phone chargers and hair appliances when you aren’t using them, why waste electricity on appliances you aren’t using?  Turn off the lights! Opt for a romantic candle lit atmosphere for dinner.  Your roommate will love you ;).  Another way to sustainable is to be a superstar like Laura Schoenike and write on a piece of paper until it is no longer recognizable.

You can also re-purpose different items such as those awesome t-shirts that seem to accumulate in your closet. Get inspired by this post.

Another easy way to be sustainable is to recycle!! Now some of you may be unsure of what is able to be recycled so here is a list of common Do’s and Don’ts.

Do:

  • Plastics with   symbol #1-7
  • Aluminum/tin cans and foil
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Cardboard (both corrugated and thin)
  • Newspaper, magazines, mail, office paper
  • Shredded paper must be kept in clear plastic bag

Don’t:

  • Styrofoam
  • Light bulbs or mirror glass
  • Food waste
  • Construction waste
  • Electronics
  • Trash
  • Plastic bags (other than for shredded paper)

The small things can make all the difference in the long run. Keep it green folks!
