Social Media Guidelines
Guidelines for Social Media
- Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are not the same platforms, nor do we communicate the same way on each. Therefore, cross posting (publishing the exact same content, word for word) on all platforms is not advised.
- Post in as much of a gender neutral manner as possible. Avoid personal gender pronouns like he, she, him, her (unless referring to a specific person) or overly feminine/masculine phrases or images, such as the following:
- Man up
- Be a man
- Throw “like a girl”
- Grow a pair
- Referring to a person as their gender (Girl)
- Using “ladies and gentleman”
- Frequency of posts:
- First and foremost, how often you post is driven by your content. More content and events naturally leads to more posts. On average…
- Facebook: 1-3 times daily
- Peak hours: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m
- Strategy: If you post earlier (see Reach section below – We may need to rephrase this to make it tie more directly to the reach section) in the day and people interact with the post, it will likely continue to show up on individual’s news feeds
- Twitter: Anywhere from 3-10 (or more) tweets daily
- Keep in mind the “shelf life” of a tweet is much shorter than a Facebook post.

- Reach
- Facebook: Not every post will appear on every person’s news feed. There is an algorithm the decides what they do and don’t see. Tactics to increase reach:
- Style of post (most engaging to least): Photo, Link/Video, plain text
- Style of language: consider asking questions, polls, quotes, etc.
- The more interaction a post receives, the longer it will continue to show up on people’s news feeds
- Twitter: There is no algorithm that decides what people see. Every tweet of every account you follow will show up in your feed. However, remember that the shelf life of a tweet is very short due to a higher number of tweets posted.
