Where To Play

There are many different places to play tennis. Some could include local tennis courts, professional tennis courts, or at school. Where you play can depend on the weather. If it is raining or snowing out, there are places you can play indoor. I personally, found an indoor tennis building where I had an instructor help me and three of my friends with our tennis skills. We would play for about two hours with the instructor. There were options to play without an instructor if you did not want one. When it is nice outside, someone could play at a local tennis court. I personally have tennis courts open to the public near my hometown that I like to go and play at. You do need to bring your own tennis equipment to play there. Otherwise, joining a team whether your in high school or college is always a good idea. It can be time consuming, but, if you really end up loving it then its worth the time and effort put in. At school, the tennis courts are likely to be open all the time for students that want to fit in the extra practice. Students will need their own tennis racket if they join the sport, but tennis balls will be included when playing with the team. Even if someone isn’t on a team, they can rent out tennis rackets and tennis balls and play for fun at some colleges.

There are many different kinds of tennis rackets to use. However, there are some that work a lot better than others. Beginners tend to buy cheaper ones in case they do not like the sport, which is understandable. But, they can be flimsy and get worn down easily.

When buying a racket, you must know whether you want one for power or one for control. Control rackets are generally for players that are more advanced or experienced . They are used for people that can use their own power in their swings and the control part comes it provides more ball control.  Ball control includes ball placement and spin. Control rackets are also heavier than rackets used for power and have a smaller head with tighter strings (the head being the top of the racket).

There are three main factors to think about when buying a racket. These include head size, frame width, and frame mass. Head size is very important, a larger head creates higher speeds of ball rebound and have more area to hit the balls. With the head being bigger, the area where the ball rebound is most accurate is larger. Frame width is basically how wide the racket frame is. When the width of the frame increases, the stiffness and speed of the ball rebound increases. The last component to picking out a racket is the frame mass. Rackets keep becoming lighter as time goes on, but this means less speed on the ball. Heavier rackets provide more power and with that, more speed on the ball. Generally, having a heavier racket provides an advantage because it prevents injury to players arms since the racket would be more resistant to the impact of the tennis ball.

The important factor is find your personal balance of power and control that a racket can provide for you. There are many different types of rackets and there are brands that are more popular and have been known to last longer than other brands.

A common tennis saying is game, set, match! When scoring a game of tennis, there are scores for games and scores for sets. There are doubles and singles teams that generally play a total of 6 games. However, that player or team must be ahead of the other side by 2 games. A tie break will happen if both sides reach 6 games won each. Players win a match when that player or team wins the majority of sets played. When it comes to winning points, there is a different kind of scoring system. Zero points is called “love”, both teams start off at love. Once the ball is served, the players will hit it back and forth until a ball is missed, hit too far, or hit into the net. Once a team wins the first point, the score is then 15-love. If the other team were to score on the team with 15 points already, the score would then be 15-all. The next point to be won goes from 15 to 30. After 30 comes 40 and after someone gains another point, the game is won. However, if both teams happened to have the same score of 40-40, then that is called a deuce. If the teams reach a deuce, one player or doubles team must get two points ahead of the other side to win the game. The side to win the next point after a deuce has “advantage”. If that side loses the point then the score goes back to deuce. If that side were to score a point after having the advantage, then the game is over and they win.

The Court

In tennis, there are given boundaries. There is a net in the middle of the court with two sides for players to be on. Within the boundaries, there two types of game plays you can play. These are singles which consts of one on one or doubles which consists of two on two.

The line on the outside is called the doubles alley. As the name itself explains, this is for doubles players only. The ball can land within that line/ touch that line and be counted as “in”. The line next to that doubles alley, a little further inside the court is called the singles sideline. This line is meant for singles players.

There is a short line on the center of the back of each side of the court. This is called the baseline and determines which side to serve on. The server always hits the ball diagonal of what side they are on, into the service box which are the boxes right behind the net. The person on the opposite side stands diagonal from the server so they are ready for the ball. If there’s a doubles team, the second player will stand on the opposite side of their teammate at the base of the other service box. This person is meant for hitting balls that come in short or closer to the net, that the person in back cannot reach.

The server gets two chances to hit if the first ball hits the net or doesn’t make it into the service box. If they miss again on the second serve, then the other team scores a point. If the ball hits the net and still goes over onto the other side, this does not count as a point. The server automatically gets another serve even if it was on their second chance of serving.
