Above is the outside of our school building. Last week 75 homes/shacks in our Alexandra township were destroyed by fire. A stove in one of the neighboring shacks where many of us live was carelessly kicked over.

A Visit to the “Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls”

August 19th, 2007 by Joy Scott

IMG_1260.JPG
What a gift and privileged it was to witness the vision of Oprah Winfrey: giving back and making a difference in the lives of young people who will in turn “give back”.

IMG_1249.JPG
I would have loved living in dorm rooms like these at Creighton University, back in the day.

IMG_1253.JPG
The academy’s library (my favourite place anywhere) is designed for the encouragement of independent reading. If you entered the school as a non-reader of great books it wouldn’t be long before you became an avid reader. Oprah Winfrey’s love of books and reading is so apparent in the shelving layout. A fireplace in Creighton’s library would have been a welcomed addition too.

My fourth Safari in Southern Africa and what do you know, I finally get to see lions in their natural environment. But, I prayed that our paths would not cross on my first ever walking safari. The walking safari included guides identifying unique birds, plant life and tracking animals; and yes, tracking them by the dung and toilet holes. And no, I did not wear this red vest on foot. LOL.
