The Year is Coming to an End

Hi All-

I can’t believe how fast this semester has gone. There are only two weeks left in the semester. INSANE! I have never been busier in my life but I have never had this many opportunities. The last time I wrote it was till up in the air what I would be doing for the summer, I didn’t have all my eggs in one basket that was for sure. However, since then I decided that the internship was really what I wanted for my summer, it is going to be a great experience and I know that it will be fun, this being said, I accepted an internship with the lottery. Although it was hard for me to tell the other companies that I would not be going any further in the interview process, this was the internship I wanted. The hardest thing was telling my wonderful boss that I didn’t want to pursue the summer grant, she took it well and was happy with me choosing what I wanted to do.

Also, I had applied to be a member of Team Transfer. This is the organization on campus that hosts the transfer students orientation during the first week on campus. I have training this Friday for it, I was also super excited because one of the girls that I met at my transfermation is actually going to be on the team with me! It will be a great experience and I am very excited for next semester.

So, my exams will be done by May 9th, with me returning to Waunakee for the summer on May 10th! The thought is bittersweet, as much as I am ready to be home, I am going to miss everything that I have here. This year has been truly amazing and I can’t believe how fast it has gone. It seems like just yesterday I had gotten my acceptance to transfer and was only telling people what I thought it would be like. UW-W has been amazing, I can’t see me being a student anywhere else.

All for now,

Talia

Interview Time

Hi All-

So, advancements on my possible job prospects for the summer. This weekend I am at home in Waunakee, mainly because I had two interviews; one thursday March 15 and then today Friday March 16.

Wisconsin Lottery Internship: I arrived at the Department of Revenue promptly at 2:25 p.m. My interview was with a woman named Beth at 2:30. The building has such a good vibe, I would love working in a place like it. It was sooooo warm yesterday I didn’t even want to put my suit jacket on, but I sucked it up so I would look presentable. The interview was approximately an hour long. Being that the Lottery is run through the state, they have to ask the same questions of everyone.  I thought I did very well with exemplifying my capabilities and making it known that this truly is the internship that I want for the summer. Working events/promotions I think will be where I want to end up. I love seeing an end product; i.e. an event. I want to have fun this summer and actually learn something while doing it! and not to mention the perk of getting to go to country fest and country thunder for FREE!!!! I will hear by the end of next week so everyone keep their fingers crossed for me!

C.H. Robinson: I had my interview with this logistics company this morning. It went well; pretty standard. However, the feeling when I walked into the building was not that of the lottery. I could tell deep down that I didn’t want this internship as much; I think that this company is amazing and going places in the future, but I wouldn’t say I necessarily would be a fit with the company. It seemed to monotone for me. I want an internship with PZAZZ! However, only time will tell with this company. They want to find me an internship that deals more with sales so they are keeping me in their mind.

Grant: I haven’t heard anything from the grant proposal; so we will see where it goes. I am still hoping to get the grant, but if I don’t obviously everything happens for a reason.

Finally, I got an e-mail for the SIAAP today. SIAAP is Summer Internship Affirmative Action Program; now this I had heard about from my friend Priya; all the internships are through the state; so I could always have a potential opportunity with something through them.

Well, I will keep you all update:)

Beginning of March-Hello Spring

Hi All-

Stopping in to give you my weekly update! Last night (3/05/12) was the deadline for the SURF application. I got it in at about 11:30(talk about procrastination) but the good thing is I got it done and turned in!My boss was absolutely thrilled that I was trying for the grant, she was a huge help in the process of the grant writing. Grant writing is another skill I can add to my resume now, I would have never expected my writing capabilities to turn into something so great as writing a grant proposal. My job at Research and Sponsored Programs has been absolutely mind boggling. I can’t believe what all I am capable of, this job has stretched my abilities to the max, in turn growing my potential and just increase my knowledge in the area of business incubation. ORSP has also offered me to come onto their own payroll, so I will now be working an extra 2 hours a week, although this doesn’t seem like much; it is. I am already running a tightly packed schedule, I honestly have never been busier in my life, but I love every minute of it.

When asked the other day by Ericka(my roommate) if Whitewater has provided me with a lot of opportuities? I had to pause and think for a moment. Has it?What does it offer different than MATC? Why is it so different now? I simply answered yes, but that is only because I myself have grown as a person. I have developed myself both professional and personally since making the transition to Whitewater. When thinking back and being asked what I wanted to do after MATC?I would reply with attend UW-Whitewater, but this experience has been sooooo much more. I have made so many long lasting relationships as well as professional contacts, but that is mainly because I WANTED to. When I was at MATC, I really did have the mindset that everyone does there, “I’m here for an education, nothing more” maybe if I would have been more open to the “campus experience” there I would have enjoyed it more, but the past is the past and and I am moving on.

The deadline for the Wisconsin Lottery Internship ended last Friday, so hopefully I will hear soon if I qualified for an interview! Also, next Friday (3/15/12) I have an interview with CH Robinson, and then I will be waiting to hear from the SURF grant committee as well. Fingers crossed that I get exactly what I want! Until next time, have a wonderful day:)

Weekly Job Scavanger Hunt

Hi All-

So I thought I would update you on what I have been doing this week in relation to my job hunt. So, as I stated in my last blog I am applying for the SURF Grant through Research and Sponsored Programs. This scholarship would allow me to get paid this summer all while furthering my research question-”what are the best practices of business incubation; in particular the graduation proceedure?” So, I would be able to conduct primary research, because I already have my secondary research pretty much finished up. This would be an amazing opportunity. The deadline for the grant proposal is March 5, so keep your fingers crossed for me!Also, the deadline for the Wisconsin Lottery Internship is tomorrow, so hopefully I will hear from them ASAP if I am going to be called back for an interview. This has been the internship that I have wanted the most; I think it will be the most fun and give me the most knowledge on even planning as well as marketing which will help my overall career. I also have an interview with CH Robinson on March 15th,  I hope this goes well too. Other than that I haven’t applied for many other positions, March is going to really be a waiting game, but come April I hope to have everything planned out for the summer. I want to be just as busy as last summer, I don’t know if I can not be busy considering what I do here everyday. Well until next time.

Job Update

I am currently in the process of expanding my resume. Right now I am working for the Department of Undergraduate Research (RSP) and they want me to apply for a summer grant to continue my research with them, and they want me to continue work next semester. I know this would be an amazing opportunity but it posses a dilemma for myself. I really wanted an internship with the Wisconsin Lottery, many people have told me it is an absolutely amazing experience. Should I do both?I don’ t know. Which would look better? Which would I be happier doing?all things I am considering, but the decision is not simple. I also have an interview with C.H. Robinson(logistics company) on March 16th. I guess I have some serious decisions to make in the next couple months. HELP ME! Stay tuned for updates on current interviews or where I am at with the grant.

Welcome to My Blog!

The thought of having a blog never really intrigued me, mainly because I feel as though my life isn’t that interesting. I generally associate a blog with students that are studying abroad or living in a different state, but now I am starting to hear that they are good for professional development as well as for socially. So, I came to this blog workshop set up by AMA, and now I am going to do a blog. Stay tuned for more.
