Harrison Bergeron

The futureristic setting of this story can be compared to our lives today.  In todays society some people hide who they really are because it does not fit into the norm of the society or they believe they will looked down apon because they are different then others.  The alarm in the heads is the same idea as hiding who you really are, the only difference is in the story they cant help it.

The Girl Next Door

1.  Brandi is a girl who has a clear emotional and physical problem with her mom and the lack of a good role model add to her problems.  On the outside Brandi puts on a cute and innocent face, but in reality she is searching for a positive role model.  When her neighbor tries to be friendly to her, Brandi returns to her old ways, she lies, steals, and destroys his things.

2.  Some people never change is what i believe the theme of this story to be.  No matter how hard you try to help someone change, some people can not change.

A Good Man is Hard to Find

This story at first brought me back to traveling with my family to Florida for Spring Break.  Sitting in the back with my two brothers, getting in arguments over little things.  The ending was a little disturbing.  I think the Grandmother got through to the Misfit, that why he was close to crying.  The Misfit says, “…it’s no real pleasure in life.”  I think he knows that killing is wrong but he does it because he was already punished for it.

The Yellow Wallpaper

The main charachter is “sick,” her family and friends believe she is fine.  They rent a house for them to stay in while their house gets fixed up.  The main character is fasinated with a yellow room.  She comes to believe that there is a woman behind the wallpaper.  On the final night, she rips all the paper off to get to the lady behind the wallpaper, the lady the creeps on the lawn during the day.  As she tears down the wallpaper, she says no one will be able to remove her from the room, for outside it is green, not yellow.  The door to the yellow room, where the main character is, is locked so no one can enter.  Finally John finds the key to the room and comes in, the main character is creeping about the room, John faints so the main character must creep over him.  This story was creepy, it showed us the journey from sane to insane.  I think the yellow wallpaper made her go mad, not her unstable identity.

Sonny’s Blues

November 4th, 2008 by richterme06

This story was about two brothers who were on different paths.  The older brother tried to tell Sonny what to do with his life and what not to do with his life.  After Sonny got clean from drugs, he joined the navy.  His brother did not agree with this however when Sonny returned and invited him to a concert where he was performing his brother saw that Sonny was clean and in the right direction.  This story showed me that tough love is sometimes good for a family to survive, even if your siblings do not take your advice, be persistant and stay in touch with them

Tiny, Smiling Daddy

This passage i could relate to, in the relationship with the father and daughter.  I am close to my dad however, he doesnt understand most of the situations i am going through.  I found it interesting how the father found it surprising that his daughter wrote a passage about himeven after their relationship towards the end.  In essence the fight they had and the last phone call they had together.

A & P – Question 3

I think Sammy quit for two reasons.  One, he wanted the girls to notice him, for him to be concidered a hero to them.  Two, he thought it was wrong how his boss handled the situation.  He thought there was no problem with a warning, but to yell at them was uncalled for.

Against School

October 28th, 2008 by richterme06

Gatto believes that schools today are like prisons.  They are forcing students to stay there and learn for a set number of hours a week.  I agree with Gatto that this system is not helpful.  We, students, are more focused on grades rather than on what we are learning in the class room.  Gatto says that boredom takes over when we are in class, i agree with him.  Half the time students arent paying attention.  The only time we pay attention is when it will help us regarding grades.  Todays school systems dont need to change right away but some changes need to be made regarding how the grading is set and how students view grades.

From Degrading To De-Grading

October 14th, 2008 by richterme06

The four years of High School, I was obsessed with getting good grades. Not just for my sake but for everyone around me, everyone was obsessed with grades. My parents even bribed me at one point, they told me they would buy me a car if I got a 4.0 GPA. They seemed to think that I need extrinsic motivation, like I was intrinsically motivated. When I think about it, during High School I was mostly extrinsically motivated, I didn’t care what I was learning it was all about what grade I received. After taking tests if some one were to ask me a question about the subject I just took a test on I would have no idea as to what the answer would be. This may be because I wasn’t be rewarded for answering the question. This essay made me think about the grading system used in schools today and if they are good or bad for students in the long run. In my opinion grades are good but to an extent, we don’t want to focus only on the grades we receive, it should be more about the learning we gain for the future.

Being Strong

October 12th, 2008 by richterme06
During my early childhood and teenage years, I grew up watching shows such as Johnny Quest, Scooby Doo, and The Magic School Bus. These shows impacted me all in different ways. I remember one day there was an all day marathon of Johnny Quest, 7 AM to 8 PM. I woke up early so I could watch from beginning to end. It was summer time and my mom stated yelling at me because I was inside watching T.V. rather than outside with my friends. The thing my mom didn’t understand was that Johnny Quest gave me a sense of power, knowledge, and persistence. Children learn though the media and shows they watch. As we grow up we watch different shows, learning more and more of who we are, developing our personality and the person we are going to be when we become adults. Children grow out of stages to become a the individuals that they are in the future. Everyone turns out differently, it depends on how they view and take in the media around them.
