Nobody tells you just how much work goes into being a resident assistant before you start the job. There’s weekly staff meetings, duty nights, floor interactions and more art projects than I ever had in elementary school. Additionally, because we are student leaders, most RAs have other commitments that go beyond just this position. Now to top it all off, we are all students who are trying to earn a college degree! So how can we deal with the many stresses in our lives? I think I may have a few ideas for you.
It’s the end of the month and I don’t know about you, but that usually signals the beginning of a busy season for me. Between Interact, Mapworks, roommate agreements and actually being a student, it feels like there is no time for anything else. Then there is the daunting task of creating a new bulletin board for your floor. For some, this is a task that seems more challenging than any paper or exam will ever be. For others, this is one of the more exciting perks of being a Resident Assistant. No matter how you feel about it, it most certainly is an element of the job that is not going away. But don’t panic! I have a few tips about how to make this particular task a little more enjoyable.
Let’s meet Chelsea, an RA on the 4th floor of Fricker. This is Chelsea’s 4th semester as an RA and she is a Pre-Medical major.
Let’s meet Marry Huff an RA in Fischer on the 3rd floor. This is Mary’s 2nd semester as an RA and she is a communications major with a human relations minor.
Let’s meet James Zimmerman the RA on Wells West 5th floor. This is his 6th semester as an RA and his major is Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling and my minor is Sociology.
