Musicals Based on Character Alignment- The Lawful

I’ve always been fascinated with the classic D&D character alignment. I thought that I would challenge myself to give musicals a character alignment. Characters are easy because you can base their alignment on their relationships, motives throughout the show, and how they react to situations. A whole show, however, is so complex that it’s hard to put it into one category. So here’s my best attempt at giving musicals character alignments. SPOILERS AHEAD Lawful Good- Les Miserables Les Miz is a classic tale of “for the greater good”. Despite the musical being about the June Rebellion of 1832, its lawful goodness comes from the protagonist and the antagonist. Jean Valjean…

    The Band’s Visit

Back in 2018, The Band’s Visit won the Tony for Best Musical. Kinda unsurprisingly, because the runners up were Frozen the Musical, Mean Girls, and Spongebob the Musical. No offense to those shows, but just listening to the cast recording, I knew that The Band’s Visit was something new, fresh and different; but I never knew just how great this show was. I just came back from seeing The Band’s Visit live for the very first time. And let me tell you, it is not just great but it is one of the most beautiful shows of this century. The Band’s Visit is about the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra, an…

    Dream Female Roles

I’ve done a post about dream roles if I were a man, but I thought it was time to finally talk about dream roles that are (somewhat) more tangible. Janis Ian- Mean Girls Janis was one of the first Mean Girls characters that I gravitated to. I had seen the movie numerous times before the musical came out. But the musical helped me through a very rough time in my life and Janis as a newly developed character helped me out a lot through that time. Janis is so near and dear to muy heart that I can’t help but want to be that to someone else. Fanny Brice- Funny…

Musicals to Listen to When You’re Sad

Sometimes life is hard. There will be days where you’ll be sad. Unfortunately that’s just life. Here’s some musicals to listen to when you need a pick me up. Kinky Boots Kinky Boots is a must see delight. The story is sweet and is the feel good musical of the century. Kinky Boots is about Charlie Price, who inherits his father’s failing shoe factory and rebuilds it into the empire it once was. Along the way he meets Lola, an eccentric Drag Queen who teaches him the importance of friendship and following your heart. With music by Cyndi Lauper, this musical will make your day just as bright as the…

Cast Albums you Should Listen To

Cast Albums are a great look into a musical. Sometimes, you can listen to an entire cast recording to understand the entire musical. Cast recordings are great ways to immersing yourself in a good musical without leaving the comfort of your own home. Here are some great cast albums that you can enjoy in your pajamas. Oklahoma 2019 Revival This revival of a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical surprised me and blew me away like no other. It took out every R&H aspect of the musical and replaced it with Bluegrass, blues, and country. Because of this, the music’s emotion is so much rawer and so much more beautiful. Hadestown…

Black Friday leaves Starkid Fans Conflicted

I really want to try not to make this blog all about Starkid, but Starkid has just been doing so much this year that it’s hard to ignore. The online musical theater company recently released a digital ticket for their new show, Black Friday. This release was a very rough recording of the show. The fully filmed and edited version of the show will be coming to YouTube at the beginning of the next year. This digital ticket is for the fans who can’t wait. Black Friday is about the biggest shopping day of the year of the same name, and the hottest toy to hit the shelves is the…

Why I Talk about “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals” So Much

It’s no surprise that I love Starkid, the internet theater group that is a leader in online musical theater content. But their most recent musical, “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals” I have a hyper fixation with especially. My obsession with this musical is almost unhealthy. So why not dive into this musical and why I love it so much. “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals” (TGWDLM) is about a guy named Paul. Spoiler alert: He doesn’t like musicals! He lives in the city of Hatchetfield and up until this point, Paul was just a normal guy, he worked in an office and avoided office pleasantries like the company softball…

    Dream Male Roles

So if it wasn’t apparent already. I’m a girl. And I have a lot of roles that I would love to play. However, I thought it would be much more fun to come up with dream male roles that I would love to play. Aaron Burr- Hamilton Aaron Burr is the main inspiration for this post. Burr acts as narrator through a majority of the show and is also one of the key founding fathers in Alexander Hamilton’s story, and the one who inevitably kills him. The best part about Burr as a character is that Lin- Manuel Miranda blessed him with some of the shows best songs. Any role…

Reasons Why I Hate ‘Be More Chill’

Be More Chill was one of the newest musicals that hit Broadway this season. With a large internet cult following, many Broadway speculated success in the mainstream theater world. However, the show was only open for 11 months and only had one tony nomination when they closed in August. Be More Chill is based on a novel by Ned Vizzini published in 2004. Jeremy is a nerdy high school student, and just like many high school students, all he wants to do is impress his crush, Christine. His friend, Michael, suggests a pill with a Japanese micro-computer embedded into it, that would connect to his brain and tell him how…

Hot Take: Hamilton is the Best Show to Grace this Earth

So I saw Hamilton the other day, and it was truly the best day of my life. I’ve been waiting to see this show all year. The only reason I got a season pass to the Marcus center is to guarantee tickets to this show. Everything about this show is absolutely phenomenal. I don’t think I have ever left a show so speechless, which makes this post so difficult to write. Hamilton is a rap- opera recounting the life of Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the birth of our nation and our national treasury. The trials and tribulations of Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and many other founding fathers are…
