Happy Graduation! and Exams

This will be my last entry before graduation so it has been fun but all good things must come to an end and the same with this blog.

Well, it’s that time of the year people. Graduation time and this time I will be taking part in the ceremonies. I am pretty excited as many of you probably are as well. It is a very big time for college students because it means the end of one period in their lives and the beginning of a whole new chapter. The friends will still be there I’m sure after you graduate, but the atmosphere won’t be the same. I am excited to be starting my new job, but on the other hand I don’t want to leave the college life. However, I am not Johnny Lechner, who by the way, in my opinion, needs to grow up and get the heck out of here already. He is SCARED to graduate. What is he going to do with his life? He really has no idea so he just stays here in school. Whatever, it is his life, but if you ask me, get a life and do something with it other than appear on talk shows. So here is my advice to incoming freshmen; enjoy life in college, because it truly is the best years of your life and you will never relive that experience again. Take chances, make mistakes, get dirty, and HAVE FUN! You only live once so live each day like it is your last and live with no regrets. HAPPY GRADUATION EVERYONE!

Well, I guess the last thing I have to say is good luck on your exams and HAPPY GRADUATION EVERYONE!

Take Out a Loan for Gas on Earth Day

General No Comments

If you haven’t noticed yet, gas prices have officially become INSANE! For the love of God, it is now $2.60 a gallon for regular unleaded. What has this country come to? That is just in Wisconsin, too, so it doesn’t even include California which I think is now at almost $4 a gallon or maybe even far past that. Thinking locally, in Whitewater, I still see students driving everywere, even if it is just down the street to campus. What are you thinking?! We all need to wake up and smell the coffee already. You would spend $40, $50, maybe even $100 just to drive down the street about 1 block to campus? Start walking people and stop being STUPID and LAZY! Don’t wonder why you don’t have any money. That’s all I have to say about that.

Earth Day is coming up soon, and I encourage all of you to get out there and enjoy the beautiful weather and make a difference. One activity you can do is to bring in 15 plastic bags to the UW Credit Union or other places on campus and they will give you a free canvas bag which is organic and recyclable down the road. There is also a hybrid cars and trucks exhibit being shown on campus. All the events are free and they each help to make this world better for ourselves as well as our children. We need to wake up and read the facts. Our planet is being destroyed everyday and if we don’t start caring, then there won’t be anything left come 10 years. So here is my advice to you on Earth Day. Don’t drive your car unless you are going out of town and don’t waste things; instead, recycle them. It takes a whole minute, if that, to separate your garbage when throwing it out. If we all recycled one bin of items, then this world would be a much cleaner and healthier place to live in.

Well, that’s it for this week, but get out and make your campus and world around you greener and stop wasting gas and polluting the environment. It is just not worth it. You will realize the consequences soon enough, and so will future generations.

A Campus Without Wires, New Meters

General No Comments

This past week, the university finally installed parking meters in the new lot behind the university center. This is a big improvement because now you can actually park there and then go to the bank or wherever in the university center you need to go. However, on the downside, if you have a commuter pass or other parking pass, then it really doesn’t help you out much. In fact, it probably deters you from parking there. No worry because you can just park on the other side, which is just a little bit farther away. Now maybe everyone won’t get as many parking tickets in that new lot. My bet is that the tickes will actually increase in quantity.

I don’t know about you, but the wireless access on campus is sometimes very hard to login into. I own a wireless PDA, or persoanl desk assistant, which is supposed to be able to access the Wi-Fi but it always has trouble doing so. It is not my handheld device that is causing the problems, it is the fact that the wireless on campus is not updated yet to be able to handle such devices. I really wish that they would do something about that because it would be a great help to me as well as many other fellow classmates on this campus. The other thing is that the range is kind of junky right now. I understand that it is expensive to do the Wi-Fi but with all the money the university keeps spending, maybe we could allocate some of it elsewhere like maybe the internet access. It is just a thought, and in fact, they probably won’t do anything to improve it.

That is it for this week but come back next week and learn something you never knew about the campus around you.

SMOKY PARKING FINES

General No Comments

To begin this week, is the subject of parking fines on campus. If you are not careful, the parking police will get you, for not buying one of their outrageously expensive passes. I have been hit a few times here and there but lately is has gotten much worse. I was walking to class the other day and noticed not one, but three little parking carts driving around in the same area. Especially hit hard is the new lot built by the university center right by Heide hall. They love to nail you there and they usually seem to get about 10 cars a day there based on how much I travel by there and see all the little pink slips on the cars. In my opinion, I think that parking on campus should free including the dorms. The cost of an on campus parking pass is over $200 now I believe. The cost of a commuter pass is about $100 last time I heard. That is outrageous especially since those people have to drive here and spend the money on gas then they have to spend the money on parking on top of that. Just watch out for the parking freaks and here is a word to the wise, they usually come out about ten minutes after classes begin for the period. I’m not saying to park illegally, I’m just stating the facts.

Now for the smoky part of this week’s segment. There is a smoking ban being proposed for the entire campus right now. According to the Royal Purple, most of the students polled support the smoking ban. I am also in favor of this for many reasons. For one, it is extremely harmful to your health, even those who are just walking into the buildings. Second, it is disgusting and dirty. I for one do not want to smell like that junk, nor do I want to have to sit by someone who does. There is supposed to be a ban on smoking right now within fifteen feet of any building door but that obviously does not hold up right now. When the time comes around, vote for the smoking ban and help clean up this campus.

That’s it for this week, have a good week everyone!

G R A D U A T I O N - ALMOST HERE BABY!

General No Comments

First, in news this week is the unfortunate fact that spring break has officially ended. I was kind of hoping that it would never end, after being in the warm Florida sun for so long. I was just getting used to it when I realized we had to come back what seemed like the next day. Now that I’m back, it seems like teachers are piling on the homework and tests. One person told me that they had a surprise test the next day and only found out the day before. Who does that? That is a little ridiculous if you ask me. I guess it is crunch time after all, since graduation is only 42 days away. But who’s counting right? Oh, that’s right, I am. I am very excited to be graduating and starting my life in the real world. Some of you may feel the same way, and others may be a little scared to do so. Whatever the case, just relax and if it was meant to be, it will happen. Don’t stress out if you don’t get your dream job right way. Something will come along and you will be overjoyed and finally relaxed and everything will work itself out.

Related to that,  do you have a job lined up for after graduation yet? If not, you should check out the on campus services with career services. They have many resources available for you to find a job after school, an internship, or just networking and interviewing skills with professionals in the industries. I have used it quite a bit, and it was worked for me without fail. Also, go to the career fair and get your name out there, because then you have connections for after school and can apply for jobs easier and maybe even land that big time company.

Well, that’s it for this week, but have a good week and hopefully your teachers don’t surprise you with a test or paper right after spring break. Keep your head up, the end is in sight!

U-DUB-DUB SITE MAKEOVER

General No Comments

In news this week, the U-Dub-Dub website recently got a facelift. The reason behind this was to make it more appealing to outsiders such as potential prospects and future students to the university. I think it looks completely professional and better than ever. However, it is semi-hard to find some of the sections that were so easily visible before, but that is just a minor detail. Also, if you venture into the website, you will find that everything else just looks the same and therefore, this whole renovation ordeal was not worth it. There are also minor glitches to the site when you visit the home page. For example, the pictures that change occasionally, stick together and cause the site to lock up for a bit. Maybe a little more planning should have been put into this redesign.

Finally, I will be going to Florida this week on Friday night for a week and a half. I think I will be seeing many of you there as well. With that said, I have a few spring break tips. First of all, watch your money and all your belongings. Always know where they are and never leave them out in the open. Second, make sure you don’t burn by wearing some sunscreen, but a little tan never hurt anyone. Finally, don’t over do it with the drinking. You don’t want to have to spend your hard earned money that was saved for the vacation on hospital bills. Just have fun, be responsible and you will have a blast! Personally, I will be staying with a friend of mine’s family in a condo for week, for free too. It will be a little nicer than having to be bombarded by all the hoards of college students in Pensacola or wherever else. We will be getting out and having fun, just not having to deal with all the stuff that is going on in the party zones. It will be a nice change of pace. I mostly just want to relax and get away from school and enjoy the warm weather, as opposed to having to fight my way through crowds.

NEW LANE JUST OPENED - SIDEWALK!

General No Comments

This week’s news certainly has a humorous side to it indeed. First of all, in this week’s police reports in the Royal Purple, a guy was cited for driving on the sidewalk. Now I don’t know about you, but I just thought that the term, sidewalk, meant a side area for you to walk on. Not another lane as this guy thought it meant. That is just plain funny and it helps to lighten up the police reports for this week since everything else in the reports is always negative. Just remember, if you are going to drink, then get a designated driver for you and your gang, because drinking and driving never mixes. Many people have died as a result of it and you don’t need to increase that number. Also in the news this week is that St. Patrick’s Day is coming up soon. What are you going to be doing this year? Maybe joining the millions of others at the bars at the bright and early time of 6AM? Or maybe you will be attending a house party instead. Either way, don’t over do it this year and end up having to celebrate in the hospital. Also, it kind of stinks this year because it is on a Monday instead of last year when it was on a weekend day I believe. Oh well, I am sure that will not stop many of the drunks we have in this town. For some reason, it seems that the Irish population grows significantly on this day, because on this day, everyone claims to be Irish, even if they have no Irish blood. Just makes it a bit more fun and helps to add to the celebrations.

Well, after that, I don’t think there is any more news worth mentioning this week. So have a good week everyone and I will see you next week!

SENIORITIS - HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS!

General No Comments

In other news, I don’t know about you, but I am really getting a mild case of senioritis. If you are not familiar with what this is, then you probably don’t have it. Senioritis is when seniors, about to graduate being to slack off, skip classes, or just become plain lazy. I, however, am just getting anxious to graduate. I have never really been a big skipper of classes, nor do I slack off on my schoolwork, but nonetheless, I am still ready to get out here and start my life after school. Don’t get me wrong, I love college, just not the academic side of it. I think most students would agree with me on that. However, in the end, all the hard work will have paid off because you will have a great job out of it and you will have had the best time and have experience the best years of your life indeed! Enjoy it while you can, because it goes fast and you will never get these years back! Finally, for some campus news, there was an article in the Royal Purple about someone who wrote in to say how sub-par the Chartwells food on this campus is. The editor tried to defend Chartwells, for what reason I do not know, but either way, I support the complaint. I have only been to the university center’s down under once since it opened. That, however, was all I needed because it was definitely sub-par. With all the money that is given to the food services on this campus, you would think that it would be put towards quality food for the students. Nope, not at all. In fact, they just make crappy food and make it at the cheapest price they can. Here’s a thought, make the food actually appetizing, and maybe you would make more money off the university and it students. If it were up to me, the university would have a few companies come in and we could sample the food, then we would be the ones to decide who provides our meals; not the big dog university officials.

Well, that ends the news for this week, but if you would like me to talk about any particular topic around campus, or around this town, drop me a comment and let me know.

PARKING AND THE WEATHER

General No Comments

Ok, first of all, to begin the news events this week is of course our good friend the weather. Yep, it’s going to snow again and it’s going to be a good one too. They are saying about six to eight inches. Isn’t that magical! Great, more snow, just what we don’t need. I swear, I think I am moving to Arizona and never coming back. Oh well, it is Wisconins after all.

In other news, the bar formerly known as The Long Branch has just completed renovations finally. It is now called the Hawk’s Nest Saloon. Despite the name change, it still has its signature swinging doors that it had with the old bar. I am sure a good majority of you will be checking it out on a certain day this week.

Finally, there is one last news topic to bring up. That would be the lack of parking spaces on this campus. Recently, especially with the crummy weather, there have been numerous instances of people getting tickets because they are being forced to park illegally in the lots due to overcrowding and the amount of people driving to class increasing. Trust me, it is not worth it to get the ticket, or to get into an accident just because you are too lazy, or you are going to be late to class. Just get a bike or leave earlier. Problem solved. Also, I think that the university parking police people should ease up a little bit because on bad weather days, many more students tend to drive to class so I think maybe we could get a little slack on those days.

Well, that’s it for this week’s news, but feel free to drop me a comment or two and let me know what you think or if you would like certain type of news featured on my page.

About This Blog

General No Comments

Hello There,
This blog will be about current news events around the area, especially the campus of UW-Whitewater. I will also feature various current events around the area, particularly our state and country.
As for the writer, I am a senior here at UW-Whitewater, and I am getting very excited to graduate in May 2008. It almost seems as if these past four years have just passed me by but that is not the case at all.

I have had a lot of fun here at UWW and I have met an immense amount of people who are all very nice. College really is the best time of your life. You should really try and enjoy it because once it’s gone, it’s gone.

I have changed my major four times and I am still graduating in four years. I am pretty proud of that, and to top that, I have been through pretty much every college here. I have had majors in the Letters and Sciences college, the Business college, and the Arts and Communications college. Now I am back in the Letters and Sciences college. I have to say that it is my favorite one overall.

Well that’s all about me, and I guess just check out my blog every week because you never know what will be featured on it.
Comments are welcome and if you have any questions, just ask or send me an IM. I’m on the computer quite a bit so I will probably respond pretty quick.
Thanks for stopping by and have a nice day!
