For two days on Nov 6 & 7, a group of learning technologists and faculty of various disciplines had the opportunity to discover the power and magic of digital story telling from nationally known expert Joe Lambert, Center for Digital Telling, Berkeley, Ca. The event was sponsored by the LTDC to explore possibilibites of self expression and documentation through creative writing and use of media technology . Over 70 participants attended this workshop at the Pyle Center, while almost the same number of interested faculty attended remotely featured speaker sessions including Liv Gjestvang, Program Coordinator, Digital Union, Ohio State University, Roger Schrank, CIO, Socratic Arts, and Dimitris Lyras, Greek ship owner. Learning Technology support staff gathered for a highly engaged discussion on possibiities of this new application of technology in teaching and learning, while sponsored faculty attended a special workshop to hone their technical skills on digital image manipulation. The partnership of the faculty and LTDC attendees are expected to bring the message “Storytime isn’t just for kindergarten anymore” back to local campuses. The event was organized by Cheryl Diermyer-UW Madison, and assisted by Pat Fellows-UW Colleges, Tom Gillespie-UW Whitewater and Elizabeth Harris at UW-Madison. Please contact your local LTDC representative if you are interested to know more about Digital Storytelling and how to get started.

E-portfolio has been a topic of discussion and pilot projects in various segments of the UW campuses for a number of years. Different products fit different needs of target audience. A current development is a product offered by D2L. While this is a new product in the market, it has some potential to fit general audience needs, especially it can be integrated with our current course management system which is widely used on UW campuses.

Through the summer, UWSP has taken a lead in negotiating a pilot agreement with D2L and UWS. We are at the stage where Letters of Intent can be signed soon. Interested campuses should contact Lorna Wong for more details.

A webcast demo on the product features is scheduled for Friday, Oct 24, 10am - noon. It is open to all interested faculty and instructional design support personnel. Please contact your LTC representative for details on participation of this demo and express your interest in the pilot program.

After a summer of planning, the UWS Quality Matters consortium is finally formed. Campuses participating include UW-Madison, UW- Oshkosh, UW-Superior, UW-LaCrosse, UW-Colleges. The QM consortia campuses are Full subscribers to Quality Matters. They will develop expertise on their own campus in applying the QM rubric in assessing online/hybrid course design, can conduct their own training for peer reviewers, and manage their own online/hybrid course review process if desired. Resources & expertise will be shared among other UW campuses. Contiuing participation is voluntary and depends on a campus or department decision. It is, however, a first step for UW to establish some guideline for online / hybrid course design assessment based on a nationally recognized program.

The LTDC plans to support the initial training for those interested in understanding the QM rubric or being a certified peer reviewer in the near future. The first session will be held at UW Oshkosh in December. Details are being finalized at this point. Please contact your local LTC representative for more information.

I would like to let all my LTDC friends know that I am settling in at my new role as the Interim Director of Learning Technology Development at UWSA. I am in the office that Alan used to occupy at 1654 Van Hise Hall. I am still learning who everybody is in the neighborhood, but the view from the 16th floor is quite nice, compared to my previous view with the dumpster and bicycle rack. Commuting from Janesville turns out to be less of a challenge than I anticipated, at least for now.

I am learning the ropes and will be relying on the support and expertise from all the LTDC friends, especially during these budget tight years. Please do not hesitate to let me know of your ideas and suggestions. Together, we can accomplish worthwhile initiatives, make our work visible, and share our expertise in effectively incorporating technology in teaching and learning in these exciting years ahead.

LTDC Communications Committee
December 10, 2007 – 10:00 a.m.
Teleconference

Members present: Jim Jorstad, Karen Ryan, Penny Ralston-Berg, and Pat Fellows. Carol Turner had a meeting conflict.

The question we addressed during the meeting was: “How do we explain to the world what the LTDC does?” We also talked about how to share our success stories more effectively.

•	On the campuses they don’t know who we are, so how can we address this issue?
o	Communications with Provosts as to what we are doing
o	Emails to instructors, administrators, IT staff
o	Utilize our D2L Portals
o	Have a link or even a small banner or widget on the campus website at various times during the year re. the LTDC
o	Newsletters – possibly created in HTML and emailed to instructors and others as mentioned above
o	Print information
o	Bi-Yearly communication of what the LTDC is doing

•	How can we be more visible with UW System groups?
o	Create a closer tie with OPID on our campuses and as a whole group
o	Be more visible at the UW System Joint Meetings (ITMS, EMTC, CUWL, CWCW, etc.)
	Possible poster session at a reception after dinner at Green Lake?

•	How can the LTDC members share what is happening on their respective campuses in more depth and detail?
o	Passport to Technology – UW LaCrosse conference for faculty in January
o	An online conference for UW System instructors, instructional designers, support staff
o	Follow UW Madison’s Academic Technology model of WLW sessions one Friday a month
	Offer our own two weeks later at the same time….
	Have some of our instructors participate in Madison’s program (a UW Colleges faculty member has done this)

Action Steps for February meeting:
•	Jim – work on how to better keep Provosts informed
•	Penny – Create a Wiki for the Communications Committee
•	Pat – Talk to UW System Joint Conference chair to begin plans for stronger LTDC presence
•	Karen – Create a Template for LTDC’s and OPID to use on campus to promote the campus LTDC’s.
•	Pat and Carol (?) – talk about how the LTDC can partner with Carol’s department to provide more visibility of what instructors across the state are doing that is innovative.

Next meeting: 2nd week of February, 2008
