LTDC Spring Meeting – Green Lake – April 20-21

The LTDC held its semi-annual – Spring Meeting as part of the ITMC meeting in Green Lake on April 20 and 21. We spent the two days with a diverse and jam packed agenda. Over 30 LTC professional staff from all UW campuses attended. We sincerely thank our OPID friends, LaVonne Cornell-Swanson and Donna Silver for joining us and reaching out for collaborative opportunities. After wading through the uncertain budget concerns, Tanya Joosten at UWM gave an excellent report on her ET grant project in Second Life. We did serious planning on the LTDC led projects in the coming year (more details forthcoming soon), shared on copyright issues with media, and online training options for faculty. Amy Mangrich led the discussion on media file handling and generated a lot in discussion on best practices. We even had relaxation Gigong exercises led by our OPID guest, Donna Silver.

Many thanks to the out-going executive committee members- Jim Jorstad and Carole Turner, and the leadership of Pat Fellows, chair, on many projects accomplished, and initiatives started.

As we move into the new year, we elected a new Exec Committee:

Quality Matters Training Workshop held on Dec 12

The LTDC sponsored a group workshop on “Applying the QM Rubric” at UW-Oshkosh on Friday, Dec 12. This workshop was led by Quality Matters certified trainer Cassie Carter. 35 faculty and instructional design and learning technology support staff from all campuses attended.

Quality Matters is a nationally recognized organization that promotes quality design of online and blended courses with a peer-review process. Curently, 6 UW campuses have joined to form a UW consortium with Quality Matters. They are UW-Madison, UW-Green Bay, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Superior, and UW-Colleges Online. This workshop serves as a first step to develop expertise in applying the QM methodology in building awareness and encouraging a more thoughtful approach to online course design among UW campuses.

LTDC Fall Conference held on Nov 5

The LTDC Fall conference was held on Nov 5, at the Pyle Center. Over 25 learning technology staff attended, almost all campuses were represented. Agenda topics included introduction of the many new staff the joined the campuses the past year; a brief discussion of various organization structures; a briefing on the e-learning work group report and recommendations; user of video and the DoIT streaming services; reports on Quality Matters, eportfolio, Learning Object repositories, Curricular Redesign RFP; Discussion on Blogs & Wikis at local campuses, and concluded with campus updates. Mary Mielke was elected to fill the three year term on the Exec Committee vacated by Lorna Wong. More detailed notes of the meeting were recorded by Carole Turner, and sent to LTDC-representatives. Digital Story Telling event well attended

For two days on Nov 6 & 7, a group of learning technologists and faculty of various disciplines had the opportunity to discover the power and magic of digital story telling from nationally known expert Joe Lambert, Center for Digital Telling, Berkeley, Ca. The event was sponsored by the LTDC to explore possibilibites of self expression and documentation through creative writing and use of media technology . Over 70 participants attended this workshop at the Pyle Center, while almost the same number of interested faculty attended remotely featured speaker sessions including Liv Gjestvang, Program Coordinator, Digital Union, Ohio State University, Roger Schrank, CIO, Socratic Arts, and Dimitris Lyras, Greek ship owner. Learning Technology support staff gathered for a highly engaged discussion on possibiities of this new application of technology in teaching and learning, while sponsored faculty attended a special workshop to hone their technical skills on digital image manipulation. The partnership of the faculty and LTDC attendees are expected to bring the message “Storytime isn’t just for kindergarten anymore” back to local campuses. The event was organized by Cheryl Diermyer-UW Madison, and assisted by Pat Fellows-UW Colleges, Tom Gillespie-UW Whitewater and Elizabeth Harris at UW-Madison. UWS Quality Matters Consortium Formed

After a summer of planning, the UWS Quality Matters consortium is finally formed. Campuses participating include UW-Madison, UW- Oshkosh, UW-Superior, UW-LaCrosse, UW-Colleges. The QM consortia campuses are Full subscribers to Quality Matters. They will develop expertise on their own campus in applying the QM rubric in assessing online/hybrid course design, can conduct their own training for peer reviewers, and manage their own online/hybrid course review process if desired. Resources & expertise will be shared among other UW campuses. Contiuing participation is voluntary and depends on a campus or department decision. It is, however, a first step for UW to establish some guideline for online / hybrid course design assessment based on a nationally recognized program.

The LTDC plans to support the initial training for those interested in understanding the QM rubric or being a certified peer reviewer in the near future. The first session will be held at UW Oshkosh in December. Details are being finalized at this point. Please contact your local LTC representative for more information.
