The LTDC held its semi-annual – Spring Meeting as part of the ITMC meeting in Green Lake on April 20 and 21. We spent the two days with a diverse and jam packed agenda. Over 30 LTC professional staff from all UW campuses attended. We sincerely thank our OPID friends, LaVonne Cornell-Swanson and Donna Silver for joining us and reaching out for collaborative opportunities. After wading through the uncertain budget concerns, Tanya Joosten at UWM gave an excellent report on her ET grant project in Second Life. We did serious planning on the LTDC led projects in the coming year (more details forthcoming soon), shared on copyright issues with media, and online training options for faculty. Amy Mangrich led the discussion on media file handling and generated a lot in discussion on best practices. We even had relaxation Gigong exercises led by our OPID guest, Donna Silver.

Many thanks to the out-going executive committee members- Jim Jorstad and Carole Turner, and the leadership of Pat Fellows, chair, on many projects accomplished, and initiatives started.

As we move into the new year, we elected a new Exec Committee:

The MIC06 Conference Committee invites you to attend the sixth Annual MERLOT International Conference. The conference will be held in the beautiful Canadian Capital of Ottawa at the Congress Centre. The MERLOT International Conference is designed to foster learning, innovation and practice in the use of information and communications technologies in higher education. It is the venue for educators, administrators, and technologists who have interests and expertise in technology-enabled teaching and learning and who recognize the need to remain current in this rapidly advancing field of educational practice and theory.

MERLOT is based on the premise of discipline-based communities of practice in which common interests in specific fields of knowledge, methods of teaching and especially in the development of technology-based teaching materials are shared. At the same time, the strength of the conference is the broad appeal across all disciplines in the use of educational technologies and the new and exciting ideas that come from exchanges among all domains of knowledge.

Important aspects of the MERLOT International Conference include the facilitation of collaborative initiatives in the development of shareable resources and in the scholarly investigation of their effectiveness on student learning in higher education. A rigorous approach to academic research and inquiry with an outcomes-based focus on the use and effectiveness of technology-enhanced teaching at the college and university levels is integral to the MERLOT philosophy.

At the same time, the Conference offers many opportunities for attendees to gain practical skills in the use of educational technologies through numerous interactive hands-on workshops lead by peers and through industry-sponsored technology showcases. It is frequently in these practical workshops and demonstrations that refreshing new insights into applications of these technologies to higher education are gained.

The MIC06 Committee encourages you to actively participate in the Conference by responding to the Call for Proposals, contacting the committee with suggestions and ideas, and making plans to attend.

Hosted by the Tennessee Board of Regents, the MERLOT International Conference will be held at the at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel and Nashville Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, July 25 – 28, 2005. The Conference provides forums for learning about shared content, peer reviews, learning objects, standards, and online communities. We welcome participation by the entire international higher education community.

Individuals are not required to be affiliated with a MERLOT institution to attend or present at the conference, nor do presentations need to address MERLOT specifically. Presentations from those engaged in the faculty development issues surrounding the MERLOT collection, use and evaluation of digital learning materials in the context of other projects are encouraged and welcomed.

The conference theme and tracks are geared toward the following audiences:

Registration includes opening reception on July 25, lunches on July 26 and 27, refreshment breaks and all sessions except pre-conference workshops, which are an additional fee.

Hotel rate: US$135.00 per day, single or double occupancy. This special rate is available 3 days prior and 3 days after the conference, based on availability.

2005 MERLOT International Conference
Welcome

Please join us for the 5th annual MERLOT Conference as we celebrate our accomplishments in creating and bringing together our global community of educators dedicated to opening the best of the world of online teaching and learning resources to higher education. The Tennessee Board of Regents will host this year’s conference. Tennessee is the land of many innovations; it is here that Sequoyah devised the Cherokee alphabet in 1809. That innovative alphabet led to the literacy of the Cherokee Nation, expanding its world. This year, we too, will expand to new worlds. Our theme focuses on looking beyond today’s horizon to the future of MERLOT and its partners as we explore online resources for higher education, implement new mechanisms for bringing the community to resources and innovative ways of using them, and engage faculty, administrators and students in their use.

The MERLOT International Conference is unique in that its program and participants bring together (and reflect) the broad spectrum of higher education, from members of community colleges to research universities; we span the disciplines, and link together the variety of campus members who focus on teaching and learning with technology, e.g., faculty, students and administrators.

Our goal is to engage you in preparing for what lies beyond the horizon with the globalization of digital teaching and learning through pre-conference workshops, concurrent sessions, round tables, hands-on workshops, panel sessions in addition to our thought-provoking keynote addresses by world renowned leaders in higher education and technology.
Who should attend?

We welcome all members of the higher education community, researchers, faculty, practitioners, administrators, and students to attend and participate in the conference. Though we all have different roles, we share common concerns about the use of digital learning materials in the service to teaching and learning. We encourage faculty, faculty developers, librarians, instructional technology professionals, researchers, and Provosts, Deans, etc., in all disciplines to participate as presenters and attendees.
About the conference

The MERLOT International Conference is an annual meeting of the MERLOT community of partners (campus, state-wide, professional societies, other digital libraries, and industry) where we celebrate and share innovative practices that work for encouraging, engaging and sustaining campus members in teaching and learning with online resources. Conference attendees span the continuum from novice to expert in the development and use of online resources. In 2004 over 425 attendees participated in over 80 sessions.

The program has something for everyone and focuses on five tracks: Instructional Practices, Creating Learning Materials, Promoting Collaborations and Communities, Faculty Development, and Digital Libraries, Technology and Standards
