DAY 2 – Begin at 8:30, adjourn at Noon.
General business and additional agenda items. Attendees are encouraged to submit their campus reports via e-mail prior to the meeting. If time is short, LTDC reps are encouraged to prioritize their list when presenting according to how much meeting time is available

Who’s attending? There is room for 32 – 34 people.

The group discussed the history of the Podcasting session… most campuses seem to be doing something with podcasting. We should do what ever we can to share what we are doing on other campuses and what is working. The intent is to understand what is going on at other campuses and learn from other campuses. How are faculty using podcasting on your campuses? What’s working? What has not worked? What are the lessons learned? What kinds of tools are campuses using?
We can’t do a lot of faculty demos due to time constraints. We can bring in one or two faculty to demo and/or discussion what they did, how they use it, what was the out come, how did it further learning, would you do it again? Consider maybe 4-6 faculty members either on site or via teleconferencing.

We need to frame this around some context.

ACTION – Fill out the campus survey on use of podcasting on your campus. Jim will send the link out to LTDC members. The survey is intended to be taken by LTDC members, it is not intended for faculty or students. There is concern about bringing faculty due to logistics and time constraints. The Podcasting Planning Committee will be better able respond to the survey by the end of this week.

* Include an option for us to bring in a faculty voice via a prerecorded technology.

The Podcasting planning committee will make some recommendations based on the survey, then send recommendations to the LTDC planning committee and share with the LTDC members. The Committee consists of:

Tanya Joosten, UW-Milwaukee – tjoosten@uwm.edu
Amy Mangrich, UW Milwaukee – amangric@uwm.edu
Mary Mielke (LTDC rep), UW-Stevens Point – Mary.Mielke@uwsp.edu
Jan Cheetham, UW-Madison – cheetham@doit.wisc.edu
Ron Cramer, UW-Madison – rjcramer@wisc.edu
Jim Jorstad, LTDC Executive Chair, UW-La Crosse- jorstad.jame@uwlax.edu

The Planning Committee will make recommendations to the LTDC Executive Board regarding inviting faculty, and the Podcasting program schedule and layout.

* Confirmations for rooms at the County Inn Suites must be done by September 10.

2) Emergency technology grant – Alan Foley – Applications can come in at any time. The money must be spent by the end of the fiscal year; something to keep in mind is If proposals come in towards the later part of the year it may be more difficult to spend the funds.
The provost needs to be made aware of the grant opportunity. Leave it up to each campus to notify the provost office.

3) Communications Committee – How do we explain to the world what LTDE does, what are our success stories?
Carole Turner, Penny Ralston-Berg and Karen Ryan volunteer to be a part of the committee with Jim Jorstad.

LTDC blog is underutilized

We want to expand use of Minds@UW Could get Dorothea Salo (Madison) to present on Minds@UW?

* Campus notes by: UW-Madison

Joosten from UW-Milwaukee for developing this. Thanks for all your help.

Emerging Technology Pilot Grant RFP

Request for Proposals

The UW System Administration and the Learning Technology Development Council (LTDC) seek proposals:
for projects that will advance the innovative use of technology for teaching and learning, and/or;
for projects related to faculty and instructional development in the effective use of technology in teaching and learning.

Funding will support single institutional or collaborative multi-institutional projects.

Program Overview:

  • The goal of this grant program is to support projects that investigate emerging technologies and creative uses of existing technologies in a timely manner, to distribute these findings promptly, and to support other University of Wisconsin campuses in their efforts to adopt these technologies.
  • Proposals must be initiated and led by the University of Wisconsin campus LTDC rep or faculty or academic staff working closely with their LTDC rep. All proposals must include the campus LTDC rep in a significant, meaningful role, if not as the PI. This ensures that the project stays within the desired guidelines, communication is open and ongoing, results are quickly disseminated to the rest of the LTDC, and other campuses interested in this new technology can get support from the previously funded LTDC member.
  • Proposals may be submitted at any time in the fiscal year or prior to the start of the fiscal year in which the project will run. There is no deadline for proposals as long as funds can be spent within the fiscal year. Projects cannot span fiscal years. Fiscal years run from July 1 to June 30.
  • Proposals will be evaluated when they are submitted or within a reasonable time as determined by the LTDC Executive Committee. This ensures timely pilots and a reasonably quick turnaround time from initial request to results.
  • Single campus applications are expected and encouraged. This ensures that interested campuses can act quickly. However, to ensure multi-campus collaboration the LTDC rep must agree to disseminate results and evaluations quickly and to assist other campuses interested in adopting the technology.
  • Projects that are funded will exhibit sound instructional design principles, clearly articulated goals, and a well-developed assessment strategy.
  • Funding levels will depend on the scope and size of the project proposed but will not exceed $5,000 per proposal. We anticipate funding several projects annually.
  • Total amount of funding for this program may vary from year to year. Funding is always subject to the availability of funds.

August LTDC Call

August 20th will be our next audio teleconference. I would like to solicit agenda items. So far, the top two items on our list include the October 11-12 LTDC Conference in River Falls, and the associated agenda. I would particularly like to discuss the podcasting program on October 11th which is being formulated by the planning committee comprised of:

Tanya Joosten, UW-Milwaukee
Amy Mangrich, UW Milwaukee
Mary Mielke (LTDC rep), UW-Stevens Point
Jan Cheetham, UW-Madison
Ron Cramer, UW-Madison
Jim Jorstad, LTDC Executive Chair, UW-La Crosse

I will also be discussing the program planning with the LTDC Exec. Committee. Your feedback on the podcasting forum will be appreciated. We should also discuss the program on Quality Matters hosted by Ron Legon which is tentatively scheduled for 2:00pm on October 11th. I am looking for Karen Ryan to bring the group up to date on the logistics for our conference at UW-RF. Be sure to book your hotel rooms.

I also want to thank again, the work of Donna Raleigh as our chair last year. Her hard work and guidance was most appreciated. I also want to thank Andy Speth and Lisa Larson, our outgoing board members, for their contributions to the board and all its activities. Each of their extra efforts greatly contributed to our LTDC successes.

I will look forward to hearing you on the 20th. The teleconferencing information is below. Please do not hesitate in contacting me with any questions or concerns. Opportunities are also appreciated!
