First Stop: Class Assignment Guides

Now that the semester is officially underway (and the Super Bowl is over), you might actually have started to think about starting to work on research projects for your courses. A great place to start your research would be the class assignment guides. Have you had an instruction session about library resources in your class - you know, either when taking a field trip to the library or having a librarian come to your classroom? Chances are pretty good that there’s a class guide made just for the project that you have to research. The guides contain links to library resources as well as credible Internet sites to begin the research process.

To find the class assignment guides, hover over Guides on the Library’s home page and click on Class Assignments or use the following link to go there directly: Class Assignment Guides.

Renew Your Books & Videos Online

Yes! You can renew your books and videos online!

How to do it
From the University Library’s home page click on “My Accounts” in the upper right corner of the purple banner. The middle login option is for “Personal Record/UB Account.” In that section, type your 7-digit UWW ID number and your last name, and then click “Login.” (When you are using the Library Catalog just click on the purple “Personal Record” button and login.)

Your “Personal Record” shows the items you have checked out from the UWW University Library, as well as any you have checked out from other UW libraries (UB requests). It also shows when they are due. To renew items click the “Renew?” box at the left of the title(s) and then click the “Renew Items” button at the bottom. The new due date should appear.

What if the due date doesn’t change?
There are limits to renewals. Students can renew materials only once. Renewals must be done before the due date (i.e., if the item is already overdue the renewal won’t work). Also, if an item has been requested by another library user, you will not be allowed to renew it.

Getting books from other libraries

OK, you need books for your paper and there aren’t enough here at UW-Whitewater on your topic, or they are already checked out. What’s a diligent student to do?

  • Try other UW libraries first. It’s free to UWW students and faculty, and books arrive in 2-4 weekdays. Here’s how: In the Library catalog, click the purple “UB & Other Catalogs” button and then click “Connect” with “All UB Libraries” highlighted in the top box. Search for a particular title or for a topic. At the bottom of the list of catalogs click on “Show” to see results, then click on the title(s) of interest. While displaying a title’s record, click on the purple “Requests” button and login. Click “OK” with “UB_Request” in the drop-down. Type your 7-digit UWW ID number again and click “Submit Request.” You should see a message that your request was successful.
  • Try local public libraries (for some titles). Their catalogs are online. For a selection see Find–Other Libraries from the Library’s home page. Links to area public library catalogs are in the lower right corner of the page. This option may not be appropriate for more academic titles, which are less likely to be in a local public library’s collection.
  • Use ILLiad Interlibrary Loan service to request books from non-UWS libraries. You don’t need to know what libraries have the book you need. There is a cost: $1 per requested book (you can pay when the book is available). This usually takes 5-7 weekdays, so plan ahead.

You will get an email to your campus email account when UB or ILLiad requests are filled and you can come to the Circulation Desk to pick up the materials.

Of course, it is possible to put a hold on a book that is checked out at UWW, but you have no control over whether the person will return it promptly, so it’s better to see if it’s available from another UW library first.

Elusive Advertising Rates

If you’re working on an advertising or marketing project and you need radio and TV ad rates, you’ve probably figured out that they’re not easy to find. Rates for print are easier to find, as you can use SRDS Media Solutions to find the rates right there. Unfortunately, it’s not as clear cut for the broadcast media.

On the other hand, using a combination of library and free internet resources can provide a good estimation of the elusive advertising rates for radio and television. How do you do it? I’ve created a guide (based heavily on Carol’s fabulous print guide that we had at the Reference Desk) that explains what you need to find information that you need to calculate ad rates. If you have any questions, make sure to ask me!

From the Library’s home page, hover over Guides then click on By Subject. The guide (will be) linked under 5) Media: Ad Rates, Audience & Circulation. Or just go straight there - Media: Estimating Radio & TV Ad Rates.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm…

Did you attend the Taylor Branch lecture and want to read his Pulitzer Prize winning work? If you search for the books in our catalog, you may be disappointed because someone beat you to it.

Fortunately for you, the Library has the perfect solution: Universal Borrowing (UB). In situations like these, you can request the available titles from the other UW campus libraries and get the book in a few days.

If you’re unfamiliar with UB, here’s what you do:

  • Click on ‘Universal Borrowing’ under the Find Books, Videos, Documents heading on the Library’s home page.
  • Make sure ‘All UB Libraries’ is selected and click Connect.
  • Enter the title in the search box and click on Title Keyword and then Search.
  • Your screen should show a list of the UW campus libraries and the search results. Click on the link to ‘Show’ result list.
  • Find a copy of the book that you’d like to request and click on the title. Make sure the status says Not Checked Out.
  • At top of the record, where you see the details of the book, click on the ‘Request’ button.
  • Log into your account with your UW-W ID number and your last name (all lowercase).
  • Click OK on the next screen, re-enter your UW-W ID number and click on Submit. Your request will then be processed. You’ll receive an e-mail to your campus address when the book is ready to be picked up at the Library.
