Pancake Mountain

Pancake Mountain:
Episodes 1-8
DVDs 1-4
Center PN1992.77 .P3 P34
New Book Island, 2nd floor

I know, you’ve been anxiously waiting for New Stuff Tuesday…

When I browse the shelves each week looking for titles to feature, I always take notice of the DVDs. Last week, I saw Pancake Mountain - since it was not shelved with our other popular movies in the PN1997s, I wondered, “What’s that?”

After some investigative research on the interwebs, it turns out that Pancake Mountain is a TV show for children - but it’s not your regular children’s programming. The show originated on public access television in the Washington, DC metro area and has grown in popularity. The show not only appeals to kids, but also to the parents, because of the musical performances by bands like Thievery Corporation, Henry Rollins and the Scissor Sisters, plus many more. If you love big-name alternative bands, then you just might enjoy this show. We have the DVDs here at the Library.

For a quick sample of the experience that is Pancake Mountain, check out the Go! Team performance from show!

Journey to Planet Earth

Global warming has been making headlines for a while now and has become a major issue on the radar of the world’s citizens. Believe or not, there are other global threats with which we should concern ourselves - like urban expansion and its effects on the surrounding areas or the current state of the world’s plants and animals.

Conveniently enough, PBS, with support from the National Science Foundation, has released a ten-volume video series to help explain the issues that affect our planet. The series entitled Journey to Planet Earth, narrated by Matt Damon and Kelly McGillis, takes you on a trip around the globe to look at how nature is holding up. Topics include water and air pollution, extinction, land use and other environmental issues.

To check the status and location of the videos, do a keyword search for “journey to planet earth” in the catalog or use the following link.

Harvey’s Wallbangers:
The 1982 Milwaukee Brewers
Center GV 863 .W62 M5 2007 DVD
New Book Island, 2nd floor

With the All-Star break upon us, and Wednesday night void of games, how are you going to cure your need for baseball? You can watch Harvey’s Wallbangers! That’s right – the often-advertised look at the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers is now ready for circulation. If you’re as excited about this season as I am, you’ll want to learn more about the history of baseball in Milwaukee.

A 2-DVD set, Harvey’s Wallbangers, introduces the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers and how these “colorful cast of characters” got to the World Series. See then and now interviews with former players such as Robin Yount, Jim Gantner, and Gorman Thomas. Listen as Bob Uecker narrates a story that starts with the 1978 Brewers and follows the ups and downs of a team that would eventually compete in the World Series. Complete with on-the-field and off-the-field clips, check this item out and travel back in time to the days when everyone kind of looked like Turnbow and Bratwurst was something you ate at a game, not cheered for.

Barbershop

Barbershop
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures
PN1997.2 .B37 2003
New Book Island, 2nd floor

When Barbershop was released in 2002, it ruffled more than a few feathers. Some viewers found remarks about African-American icons, like Jesse Jackson, irreverent and distasteful. On the surface, Barbershop is a story about Calvin (Ice Cube), who runs the barbershop he inherited from his father on Chicago’s South Side. He’s got dreams and this shabby business is stalling his progress. But as the business begins to slip through his fingers, Calvin gets a clue about what his barbershop really stands for. Calvin’s fellow barbers are side-splittingly funny, including Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), who always tells it like it is. Jimmy is well-educated, but a total snob and he can’t stand Isaac (Troy Garity), the barber who hasn’t figured out that he’s white. On a deeper level, this movie is not only about the social institutions that create community, but about individualism and the “average joe” as the defining element of cultural identity. But don’t let all that deep stuff scare you – this movie is hilarious.

Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz
Turner Entertainment
PN1997 .W59 2005
New Book Island, 2nd floor

Follow the yellow brick road … to adventure. Every year, I looked forward to watching this magical tale when it returned to television. Once, I made the mistake of watching it alone on our dark, cold TV porch and nearly fainted in terror when the Wicked Witch of the West appeared on the scene. No childhood would be complete without the story of Dorothy, who, with her little dog Toto, Scarecrow, Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion, make their way through the witch-infested woods to find the Wizard, who will send Dorothy back to Kansas. Relive the magic of Oz with this 2 DVD set. Disc 2 includes documentaries, trailers, a photo gallery and lots more memorabilia.
