And the Wisconsin winner is…

“Go green!” is the motto for today’s society. In keeping with the trend to keep our environment clean and healthy, parents and educators can teach kids at a young age how to recycle. Keepin’ It in the Loop: a Recycling Activity and Learning Guide For Educators and Students (call number NAT 6/2:R 42/17/2007 and NAT 6/2:R 42/17/2007) recently won the prestigious Wisconsin Distinguished Documents award given out each year to a Wisconsin government document that “contributes significantly to the expansion of knowledge; provides inspiration and pleasure to an identifiable readership; contributes to public understanding of government agencies; and is distinguished by the clarity of its presentation, its typography and design, and its overall appeal.”

The Department of Natural Resources made these documents to teach young kids the importance of recycling and created fun and clever activities to make them think about the impact they have on their environment.

On June 6, 2008, Government Information Day in Madison, those who compiled these documents proudly received their awards from the Government Information Roundtable section of the Wisconsin Library Association for designing and creating these documents. Lessons Learned from 9/11

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 impacted the way of life for many Americans. From government agencies to law enforcement, changes have been implemented to prepare for the next disaster.

Lessons Learned from 9/11

The National Institute of Justice utilized the knowledge of experts related to the field of forensic sciences who have experience with the events of September 11th to publish their findings of “lessons learned” in the policies and procedures of identifying victims who perished in the World Trade Center attacks. These experts discuss “DNA protocols, laboratory techniques, and statistical approaches” for officials who deal directly with mass fatality incidents. Covering such issues as the basics of DNA identification, major decisions for officials and forensic experts to make during the mass fatality event, information technology used in each procedure, how to properly conduct media sessions, establishing relationships between those identifying the bodies and the victims’ families, how to report accurate statistics and findings, and how to maintain quality control in a DNA laboratory.

If you’re a forensics, biology, or a criminal justice student, or just curious about DNA procedures, check out this government documents publication.

Hurricane Katrina: A Nation Still Unprepared

A Nation Still Unprepared

You’ve heard about the havoc Hurricane Katrina wreaked on the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Now you can read all about the effects the storm had on the residents of these affected areas and the government’s response to the human tragedy that hit the U.S. coast in the summer of 2005.

The Senate Committee of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs has compiled a 700-page bound document entitled Hurricane Katrina: A Nation Still Unprepared, filled with colored photos of the devastated areas, detailed descriptions of what happened before, during, and after the hurricane hit, and the chaos and confusion created by government failure to meet the people’s needs. As a result, this document cites the fraud and wasteful spending which followed the devastation, errors and mistakes that should not have been made, and provides recommendations from their findings on how to prevent the chaos from happening during any other emergency situation as well as key points to help better prepare the nation for future disasters that will avoid the confusion, wasted time and funds, and better meet the needs of the people affected.
