The city of Kittatiny will be hit hard this coming year if the mayor’s budget proposal goes through.

Along with the shutdown of Sesquehanna Steel, Mayor Gustavus Petykiewicz wants to lay off employees and cut hours. He plans to lay off two police officers and two workers from city hall, belonging to AFCME.

“The layoffs need to be done, but I’m not happy about it,” the mayor said.

Parking fees will be hit as well, with an increase of 60 percent on the parking meters on Main Street. Police officials are encouraged to write more parking tickets as well, despite layoffs in the department.

The mayor is asking Schuylkill County sheriffs to handle emergency calls for the shift of 4 a.m. – noon as that shift will be eliminated in Kittatinny. Chief of Police, Roman Hruska is not happy with this saying, “we cannot deal with part time work in this city.”

Hruska also said that he and Petykiewicz don’t see eye to eye.

One major part of his proposal is the elimination of the tax levy on garbage pickup. The tax rate will increase, tacking on nearly $187,000 for that service.

Petykiewicz said he would consider taking a reasonable pay cut to cope with the hard times. Chief of Police, Roman Hruska says he would be willing to take a 10 percent pay cut and encourages all other union employees to do the same, including the mayor.

It is rough on the people who have lost their jobs to pay taxes. Some might not pay because it is not fair and they don’t agree.

An added expense to the budget from last year is a 15.5 percent increase in Asphalt. Main street is looking pretty bad and needs to be repaved according to Petykiewicz.

A new police cruiser for next year is needed for next year. The one they have now is almost unable to operate.

The mayor assured there needs to be two cars on the scene at all times. There are currently three cars including the almost broken one but there if one goes into the shop it could take some time to be fixed.

This provides a nice safety blanket.

The new cruiser won’t be cheap, cost over $50,000. It isn’t cheap but Petykiewicz assures everyone saying, “we’re all in this together.”

The beach needs some help to keep up tourism dollars, visitors and its reputation. This won’t be easy but something needs to change in this city in the next year

A lot of people are unaware that UW-Whitewater actually has it’s own radio station and friends of mine have even recommended it over WMSE (MSOE) or WSUM (UW-Milwaukee). I have a couple of mine own shows on there, each an hour long and I try to help out as much as I can. There are a lot of people behind the scenes that make this radio great but we want YOU to listen.

We are mainly an Alternative station but we also Hip-Hop Humpday which is all day Wednesdays until 6a.m. on Thursday mornings. Metal at Midnight goes from Midnight – 6a.m. and all days except Wednesdays. We also have a bunch of studies that do specialty shows ranging from blues, Post – Hardcore, Rock, Pop, Techno, and country. There are also a lot of sports talk shows starting at 3p.m. every Monday – Thursday. WSUW plays a lot of new and underground music as well so if you want to hear something new just tune in and take a listen. Like what you hear? Call in and ask what song you just heard, or even make a request if there’s something you want to hear.

College radio is the most fun because you have the most freedom to play what you want and you won’t get overplayed “radio rock” and stuff you hear on KISS fm. Turn your dial to 91.7 if you’re in the Whitewater area or stream at www.917theedge.com and click the “Listen Live” link. It’s that simple. Tell your friends and enjoy.

Professor and director of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus radio station WSUW does much more than that.

Brian “Looper” Lucas has his hands full during the school year. He is a husband and parent and is also active in a few blues bands including the Hootchy – Kootchy Band and the Organ Grinders.

Music has had the biggest impact on his life.

A lot of big local acts have had him sit in and play harmonica or sing along with them. He has ventured all over the Midwest but his favorite place to play is Clarksdale, Miss. for their annual Juke Joint Festival.

Producing music, mixing and doing live sound for bands is a big hobby of his. The biggest group he helped produce was Decibully from Milwaukee, Wis. The band used one of those tracks on an album and gave him the credit for that.

He is a graduate of UW-Whitewater and resident of Elkhorn. When asked why he chose to stay at the same school he attended his reasons were the location, students, workers in the Communications Department, and of course the radio station.

Lucas has been the director of WSUW for a few years now and is also adviser to the Aikido Club which is a martial arts organization at Whitewater. He studied the art as a kid and misses doing it as well.

Lucas was deemed the nickname “Looper” when he was in 6th grade and doesn’t exactly know why kids started calling him that but he never liked it. When he told his mom about it she told him, “don’t look at is a bad thing, it could be a good thing,” and it forever stuck.

One would wonder how he manages to be involved in all of this and have a family. He said the main leisure activity he stays away from his watching TV. “You’d be surprised how much more time you have,” he stated as a follow up.

He would love to be able to spend more time with his family. No activity his better than the next according to him. When he has time, some fun things he likes to do include traveling, bike riding and taking pictures.

Lucas is involved with International Intercultural studies at the university and is taking students to Ireland to study abroad at the end of the semester.
