Another Newsroom Reduces Staff

In a very short blog post on Adweek, Chris O’Shea indicates that as many as 24 staffers from the New York Daily News have elected to take a buyout package offered by the newspaper in lieu of layoffs. This action comes after years of reduced ad revenue and a shrinking profit margin.

New Kind of Ads coming to Facebook

In an article on SocialTimes, Marty Swant examined a new type of advertising that will be coming to Facebook. This advertising utilizes user’s news feeds to deliver advertising to the masses. Social Media Shows Its Strength Through 2016 Election

It is safe to say that the shock of this election is still settling in for most people. Despite your political view, if you followed most of the polls leading up to the general election you would have assumed that Hillary Clinton was going to be the likely winner. A variety of polls were showing her up by several points, especially in critical demographics. Things did not follow as the polls were predicting.

In the news lately, there have been a lot of reports of fake news stories. Most of these stories have been linked to the upcoming election. These stories have eroded the trust that readers and viewers have in mass media. This decline in trust is not new, but something that has been accumulating for a long time. This worrying trend is examined in an article by Terry Heaton. He explains that the public’s trust in mass media is hanging by a thread. Less than 35% of those polled in a recent Gallup poll indicated that they had a “great deal or fair” amount of trust in the mass media, currently. He explains that not only have the fake news stories contributed to this decline, but the election itself: namely presidential candidate Donald Trump.
