International Dinner 2012
Students and staff members at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater are invited to join together with the Whitewater community for a cultural, flavorful experience. The annual International Dinner will be held on Friday, March 2 with the theme “Breaking Stereotypes, Building Traditions.”
The evening will feature dishes from 13 countries and entertainment including skits, singing, dancing and live music. The event, held in the Hamilton Room of the James R. Connor University Center, has a reputation for selling out each year, so those wishing to attend are encouraged to get tickets as soon as possible.
Jessica Harmatys, student services specialist in the Center for Global Education, said the purpose of the dinner is for people to learn about the world and be exposed to different types of food and cultural traditions.
“Many students at UW-Whitewater are unable to study abroad for various reasons, so this is a wonderful event where they can experience the world. This event is where our international students get to shine and share their culture and traditions with the campus and Whitewater community,” Harmatys said.
The menu was selected from recipes submitted by international students and will be prepared by Chartwells. Nima Salami, a business student from Iran, will perform classical guitar during dinner, followed by entertainment provided by the International Student Association.
“I hope that people will walk away challenged to address and change some of the stereotypes that they’ve had about the world. I also hope they will leave with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of diversity that our international students bring to UW-Whitewater,” Harmatys said.
Tickets are $19 for the public and $11 for students and children. Purchase tickets at the Center of the Arts Ticket Center, tickets.uww.edu, or call 262-472-2222. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
ISA is starting an initiative on relief support to our friends and in Japan.
ISA feels concerned about the tragedy that happened in Japan yesterday, It is horrible over there right now, phone lines are off and there is an important amount of loss of lives and also material damage. Every hour small earthquakes start in parts of Japan. We have ISA members over there, many Japenese students attending UW-Whitewater, and Whitewater exchange students over there. We feel obliged to show support and help with whatever we can. We would like to remind you to show support to people here by contacting them and offering help if needed, it is a tragic moment and I am sure our Japenese members are worried about their family and friends, sending them a kind word would be appreciated!
If you wonder how you can help even more, here is how you can:
First emergency meeting on Monday, March 14th at 5 pm in Hyland 2319 to discuss a plan of action. Please pass the message lets show support to our friends. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend!
Our prayers go to people in Japan!
ISA is organizing a trip to Chicago in April 16th. We will leave on Saturday and we will back to Whitewater in April 17th. We are trying to get a cheap hotel price downtown chicago. However we need to know how many people are interested in order to get the best deal. ALl you have to do is email email@example.com and say you would like to sign up. We will then send your the prices and all the info of the trip. We will most likely vist the chicago museum, and visit some sites and everyone is then free to do their own thing later in the evening although we usually stick together and have fun together as ISA.
It was a lot of fun last year and we are hoping it will be again this year so don’t miss out and sign up with us!
Looking forward to the trip!
LOVE FROM ISA BOARD
