There is so much to get excited about when moving that it could be easy to forget about the place you are moving out of. It is important to clean up before moving out to prevent charges from your landlord and to make sure you don’t leave any of your personal belongings behind.
The best way to move out is to make a plan ahead of time. Make a list of all of the items that you need: boxes, tape, markers, newspaper to wrap up fragile items. Then make a checklist of each room in your house to check off as you go.
Start at one end of your home and go through every room, one room at a time. Look in every corner and closet. Carry a box or bag with you so you have a place to discard items that you do not want or need anymore. Box things up as you go and label all of your boxes by room name (i.e. kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom). As you make your way from room to room keep all of the boxes open in each room so that you can rearrange items later in the boxes if needed. Do not box up any cleaning supplies yet, simply gather them all in one place.
After you have everything out of every room, it is time to clean. Start with the walls as it can be messy to fill holes. Remove nails first. Then fill all holes you made in walls with putty and paint that matches the room color. Be sure to vacuum, dust, and clean windows and mirrors. A good rule of thumb is to make the apartment look better than it did when you moved in.
If you follow these steps, you will make the moving out process a piece of cake and avoid additional costs from your landlord.
