Have you ever noticed how fast food trends change? One day you’re told all fats should be avoided at all costs, and the next you hear that some may be extremely beneficial to your health. This can make it hard to make healthy food options. When different information is coming from all directions, you don’t know who or what to believe.

How is it that what is considered “healthy” changes so much? Well, there are multiple reasons being discussed. For one, there is always new research being conducted. Sometimes scientists simply make new discoveries that impact the already promoted healthy lifestyle. The famous Food Pyramid is a great example of this. For those who may not know, the Food Pyramid is a visual guide to understanding what foods we should intake, including portion sizes. The Department of Health is in charge of conducting research of national dietary guidelines, and there have been significant changes in the past, short two years.

The images above represent the changes that have happened in the past two years.

Another theory is that brands pay off certain food producers and journalists to incorporate their product in whatever the current health food craze is. An example of this is animal products. Most meats are sold as being protein heavy and beneficial to the human body, especially those trying to gain strength. Because of this, most meat industries take advantage of this and promote their product as such. The reality is that these products aren’t 100% absorbable-protein because of the high amounts of saturated fat, hormones, and chemicals.

It’s important when discussing food trends that we keep in mind that, that is exactly what they are; trends. They are timebound, and each must be taken with a grain of salt.
