Back in high school at Madison East, diversity played a main role in our everyday life, announcements which stated “diversity and pride, we are the east-side” were heard daily on the loudspeaker. This was way back during my high school years at Madison East. At East we had a variety of cultures and races. Many different kinds of races including: Asian, Hispanic, African-American, actually made up the majority of the school. Some of these kids had been in America their whole lives or some who just got to America and spoke little English. Diversity defined is the condition of being diverse :variety;especially: the inclusion of diverse people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization. Now that I am at Whitewater, I personally believe the diversity has decreased, not that there are no minorities i’ve seen walking around campus but I have noticed the difference. Coming from Madison to Whitewater has definitely taken a toll on the minority population. Many people I think believe that Whitewater has a lot of diversity due to the fact that they are from smaller towns, possibly in the country. I believe that diversity is a positive thing and can only help Whitewater as a school and a community.
Milwaukee Iron Works: “We’ll whip your assets into shape.”
I have many favorite brands some of them include: Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, Affliction, and Xtreme Couture to name a few. Nike and Adidas provide me with fashionable footwear and athletic apparel. Under Armour is my main source of workout gear, whether I am running, lifting, or wrestling I will usually have one Under Armour garment on. Specifically the heat gear that I wear when I need to lose weight fast for wrestling. The heat gear keeps my body temperature high so I sweat off the extra weight. Affliction and Xtreme Couture are mixed martial art brands of clothing. Xtreme Couture was founded by Randy Couture an ex-heavyweight UFC champion who opened his own mixed martial arts training organization and then created the apparel to go along with the gym. Affliction runs a mixed martial arts promotion and also is a MMA clothing manufacturer as well. The reason I wear Affliction and Xtreme Couture is because of their attractive and unique style of apparel. Called “skull and cross-bone inspired” these t-shirts represent my own fashion as well as what I do. Not only do I wrestle but I also fight in mixed martial art tournaments held in Madison, Wisconsin. Nowadays you see a lot of people wearing “MMA” shirts only for the fashion, I wear their apparel not only for a fashion statement but also because I am a participant in the sport, not just a fan.

Since the last college transition post, I have adjusted to the college lifestyle. I know what is necessary to be a successful college student and athlete however I do have to admit that my life is very hectic, with things usually planned all day. Still no social life like I mentioned in my past blog post because I am to tired at the end of the day to go out. During the week I sometimes have to wake up at 5:50 a.m. to workout by 6:30, and these workouts are very exhausting and drain both your physcial and mental energy but it’s something I am passionate about and have to do for myself. Last week we did buddy carries (just like a piggy back ride) where we have to carry our partner up the football stadium bleachers. After that, I go to class and come home and go to the gym to wrestle. Usually I start to fall asleep when I am studying at about 8:00 p.m. as a result of all the work. Math: I have always been a poor math student since middle school, always getting a C/D average in classes. Just yesterday I had my first math exam which I am confident that I failed. The frustrating part is that I have put alot of work in getting tutoring at McCutchan Hall for Math. I was starting to to understand the concepts with a specififc tutor helping me until there were different tutors there. I went in both the day before and the day of my test to get help but both times I was told “Sorry, we don’t know how to do your kind of math” by the the tutors. Very distrubing how they hire people to help specifically with math who don’t even know how do do freshmen math. On the brighter side things havent been so overwhelming as before and it’s starting to be more of a routine than a chore.
The transition from high school to college has been everything I excepted and prepared for. Although I miss home cooked meals, for the quality and variety the new responsibilities and experiences have been great the first three weeks. One observation I have made is that in high school the teachers were all concerned about you and would actually scold you if you didn’t complete a assignment, in college the professors don’t care! They treat you like adults and will not hound you if you do not do your work, instead it is all up to you. Along with that I have learned that time management is another thing I have have to take seriously, being a member of the wrestling team is very time consuming and strenuous and after the workouts which sometimes are twice a day I have no energy to study or have a social life. To maintain this day to day, I have to make sure I live a healthy lifestyle and keep up on my schoolwork. I also look at my experience so far and compare it with my first year in high school. I went to East High school in Madison, which is a big city school thats very diverse which I think also helped prepare for the multi-cultural population here at Whitewater. I also remember my Freshmen year at East and how I felt. I was immediately overwhelmed with school work and got lost everyday for the first two weeks, these feelings are similar to my Freshmen year in high school, but after awhile I adjusted and had a great high school career. Which leads me to believe that I will have a a successful time here at UW-Whitewater.
I love New Student Seminar!
