  • title Diversity on campus

According to dictionary.com, diversity is the state or fact of being diverse; difference; unlikeness.  I would like to talk about the diversity on our campus when it comes to education.  The vast majority of students at whitewater are majoring in business, but there are also other large subgroups such as teaching and physical education.  Besides that, there are also many other majors relating to science, the arts, and a vast array of different majors.  Diversity in majors is often not thought of, but it plays a big impact on our campus society.  Business and education majors have many more resources to succeed in their major, where the smaller fields have less.  It is easier for people to network and make friends when several people are interested in the same career as you.  Just as differences in a person’s skin color causes people to act differently, so may a person’s major.  Oh, you’re going to be a chemist?  Ok… That’s cool.  Whereas people going into the same field as you have common interests, just as people with the same skin color have common looks and culture.  Diversity is important in marketing, as a marketer needs to be able to target people from each diverse field.  Diversity is not just skin color or culture, it goes much deeper.  My example of education shows that you cannot market the same way to two different educational experiences.  Thus, a marketer needs to know about each aspect of their target market so they can successfully market to everyone in that field, and understand the diversity in their market so that they do not offend anyone.YouTube Preview Image

    title Brand name and slogan

Nike is a great brand.  They make quality shoes and apparel.  It is worth the price you pay because they are so comfortable, stylish, and they last so long.  Any other company does not compare when it comes to shoes.  Nike is also great for apparel.  You can get Nike socks, shirts, pants, gym bags, hats, and sporting equipment.  This brand is worth the price because it makes me feel not only acceptable, but confident in what I am wearing.  The Nike brand, as seen by others, enforces a cooler and more athletic image.  It implies that if you wear Nike, you do well on and off the court.  You not only do well in the game, but you also do well peers, and most importantly “the ladies”.  The slogan, “Just do it”, is an amazing slogan.  It’s simple, sounds good, and conveys a positive, sports like image to the Nike organization.  “Just do it” is also very inspirational.  With the commercials, it implies that if you wear Nike brand you will feel more confident on the court or in the game.  Nike’s powerful brand and slogan has made them millions.  We, as consumers, feel like there is no alternative to Nike.

    title Transition into College 2

College is going much better.  My friends are great, my classes are alright, and I am adjusting to the new life.  College has kind of changed me.  I did not intentionally choose to stop talking to my friends from home, but it just happened.  My parents were also very strict, so my life has changed now that I make all of the decisions.  I am also joining a fraternity, something that I thought I would never do.  I am involved in many clubs.  For example: A.M.A. (American Marketing Association), Portfolio Management Group, DECA, Phi Beta Lamda (FBLA), and Men’s Volleyball.  I am very active, but that makes it very hard to keep up with all of the school work assigned.  School is so much harder than I expected.  It is difficult to get everything done, especially when all of your teachers assign big assignments and tests in the same week.  School is also very stressful.  Besides maintaining social relationships and a healthy body, I also have far more difficult classes than most freshmen.  All of the learning community classes seem to be far more challenging than the classes for students not in a learning community.  Because of this, my GPA is struggling and I will be lucky to pull out a 3.0.  Even though college is going alright, I still have a lot of things to work out.  The transition should get better soon.

    title Alcohol/Drug Abuse

Alcohol and drug abuse can be very dangerous.  Abusing either could result in death.  Is it really worth the risk?  I think that drinking alcohol in moderation is okay.  It obviously is if they allow people 21+ to legally do it.  But when you get to the point of puking, memory loss, or passing out you are going to far.  Using illegal drugs, or legal drugs irresponsibility, is dangerous in any way.  Anyone that uses illegal drugs is making poor decisions with their life.  If you really need drugs or alcohol to have fun, something is wrong with you.  Wouldn’t it be more fun going to a movie with your girlfriend than getting hammered and puking everywhere?  Or instead of smoking, how about playing a sport with your friends that you really enjoy?  Drugs and alcohol are a terrible option for anyone hoping to have a great career.  In the long-run, it can only hurt you.  Alcohol has some benefits, like it can help you out if your stressed out.  But when you binge drink and abuse it, you are risking a lot more.  It is especially dangerous for anyone under the age of 21, especially around this campus, because they are also risking getting an expensive ticket, the respect of their peers, and their education which they worked so hard to get.  Summing up, alcohol or drug abuse is not worth doing because the consequences are much greater than the benefits.

    title Transition into College

College is definitely a challenging transition.   There are many things which make it really different than high school.  For starters, a whole new life.  I spend so little time in school, but so much time out of school doing homework.  I can not breeze through college just by being smart like I can in high school.  It is hard to keep track of everything in college because it is all new and everything is my responsibility.  High school is simpler, same routine every day.  In college I have to balance everything, which is way harder than it sounds.  Everyone is always wanting to hang out, and its fun so I do it.  But then a lot of my schoolwork does not get done, especially the readings.  I think I will be fine in a few weeks, I just need to learn to adjust to this new lifestyle.  Living on my own has gone pretty well though.  I know what i need to do to maintain a healthy lifestyle, now i just need to learn to balance school and fun.  Otherwise the transition went really well.  One depressing thing is that it feels like I no longer belong to my family.  I never see them, and although i miss them it feels like my floor is my new family.  After all, they are the ones that i see everyday and spend most of my time with.  My friends, family, and home have changed literally within a few days.  I have truly become a different person because of college, but it is for the best.
