Milwaukee collectors Marvin and Janet Fishman have generously provided a selection of works on paper from their collection for this exhibition. The Fishman Collection is recognized internationally as one of the premier aggregations of German Expressionist works on paper. In addition to the work drawn directly from the collection, additional works selected from past gifts to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Permanent Collection by Marvin and Janet Fishman will also be displayed. Marvin Fishman and his wife Janet started collecting artwork in the early 1950s when they were first married and starting out in their lives. Initially they began with works that were familiar to them and popular among other collectors. They eventually chose to collect a specific kind of artwork, pieces that were created by artists in Germany during the years right after the First World War. The works produced by these artists are lumped together under the heading of German Expressionism, although scholars of the era may differentiate between the various styles and artists with more precise groupings.
