We’re happy the days are getting longer and that Winter is really ready to kick into gear!
Despite the cold weather and desire to hibernate we are busy printing and adding new stuff to our
Store and the Blog. We are also pushing each other to make more and more socially engaged work
for these intense times.
We’re working on a collaborative installation, “Which Side Are You On?“, that will be exhibited in March at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the Union Art Gallery. There are also a bunch of group projects like books, portfolios, as well as website improvements planned for the next year. So keep an eye out in 2009!
To mention again, we are proud to have expanded the collective with 5 new members since our retreat last November. We welcome Melanie Cervantes, Jesus Barraza, Faviana Rodriguez, Jesse Purcell, and Fernando Marti to the group!

New to the Store

  • Melanie Cervantes has introduced 2 multi-colored screenprints to the site. La Resistencia is a poster in honoring the resitance to the Israli occupation. Atenco Aguanta is a poster made in solidarity with the indigenous people of San Salvador Atenco in supporting their resistance to developing on their communal lands in the face of brutal government repression.
  • Jesus Barraza’s La Palestina exhibits the strength of Palestinian women, while El Danzante was a poster created for the 2007 Day of the Dead ceremonies. Jesus has a lot more prints ready to get posted on the site, so check in regularly.
  • Favianna Rodriguez’s Raw is a full-color poster that explores a woman’s identity and image from every angle—cultural, physical, commercial, historical, spiritual
  • Kevin Caplicki has his first two screenprints on the site, Self-Determination about the USA agressions toward Iraq and Sembramos… a poster inspired by the Zapatistas Other Campaign a few years ago.
  • Dylan Miner has made a one color relief print of Métis (Indigenous Canadian) freedom fighter Gabriel Dumont
  • Reproduce and Revolt is a 2-color screenprinted poster designed by Jesus Barraza that collects some of the best anti-war graphics from the Reproduce & Revolt book

Individual Member Projects

  • Shaun Slifer is learning letterpress printing and having a blast with it. There will be copies of Bring Back the Wolves in the Justseeds store soon! He’ll be presenting a gallery version of his Patching Potholes project at Allegheny College in January, then taking it to Colombia College Chicago in March. Lastly he’ll be editing videos when the time allows.
  • In January Colin Matthes will be completing an installation at the Armoury Gallery in Milwaukee and also reprinting the sold out print, Shopping and Soldiering. The new version will be on better paper and 25×18.” Also, his War Fair: Occupation Games for Citizens and Non-Combatants show at Inova (Milwaukee) will be ending January 18. You can see images from the exhibition on his Flickr. In February he heads to Texas to mount the exhibition “Credit is Alright” at University of Texas Pan-American. In March he’ll go back to Wisconsin to work on the collaborative show with Justseeds and also to make a wall drawing at the Haggerty Museum. He’s also workin’ on some new screen prints and woodcuts.
  • Melanie Cervantes and Jesus Barraza will commence a 7-week workshop series, in January, at San Leandro High School focusing on how to design a political poster. The course will culminate in a group show of Jesus, Melanie, and the students work at the school. In February they will be working with writer Leslie Marmon Silko and Tierra Y Libertad, a grassroots organization that works with the Mexicano/a and Xicana/o community in Tucson, on a cultural fundraiser that will support their land based organizing. They will also be creating a collaborative print for the documentary film “RC’s Unsung Story” by Pepe Uriquijo.

“Images of New Whitewater”

It has been suggested to me to consider an art show “Images of New
Whitewater” – paintings or drawings of the Arch, The stone stable, the
new facades and store fronts downtown, Cravath Lakefront Park, the new
CAC etc.
If you would be interested in participating, let me know. No date has
been set. I am just inquiring to see if there is enough interest.
Perhaps we could get students involved.

COMMUNITY and RESISTANCE

What defines your community? Who are you, within your community? Has your community changed you? Have you changed your community? What other forces have changed your community? What cultures and traditions do you have in your community?

How do you define resistance? When is resistance worthwhile? When is it futile? Have you even been part of any organized resistance? Who inspires your resistance? What ways have you or your community resisted the dominant powers?

We want to hear about it.

Essays, articles, interviews, reviews, drawings, sketches, word art, photography and any creative expression that has social, political or cultural content on the themes.

We are especially interested in increasing our presentation of essays, editorials, drawings and comics. Additionally, we welcome poetry in Spanish and Arabic.

Early submissions are appreciated and receive more attention, so get yours in soon! Below are our guidelines, deadlines and other pertinent information.

Thanks!

3. Only 3 submissions per person per issue.

5. Include a 40-word bio/listing for our Directory. Creative and quirky listings are encouraged. Include your contact info please.

Directory: Contributors are entitled to a 40-word listing/bio in the issue in which they are published. We encourage creative listings.

Payment: Because NH is a DIY, volunteer publication, we pay in the form of copies, but require contributors to send in stamps or checks to cover postage costs. Contributors outside the U.S. must pay postage for delivery.

NEW
Den Haag, The Netherlands + Marcello’s Art Factory/URM Project
An Urban Ready Made (URM) is a street, a building, a view, an object
or an event in an urban- or industrial environment, where a
conjunction of circumstances cause beauty and art. When an artist or
architect declares this (with some ritual proceedings) art, it becomes
an Urban Ready Made. With the Urban Ready Mades Project we would like
to bring art closer to people. Art doesn’t have to be difficult to
understand. You can find beauty everywhere and to enjoy art you don’t
have to visit a museum or an exposition. We hope our project lets
people realize that they can find art and beauty in their own city.

Marcello & Els, the founders of the project, want to give other
artists and architects a chance to declare an URM in their own
surroundings and join this unique concept. This way there will grow a
“gesammtkunstwerk” (a collective work of art) of thousands of URM’s,
which will go beyond borders. Firstly this is going to take place in
the form of a virtual exhibition on the World Wide Web, crossing
virtual borders. In the year 2010 it will become a traveling
exhibition, kicking off in The Hague.

accomplished. SPARC, the Social and Public Art Resource Center in
