This exhibit has been organized by Josh MacPhee and will showcase print art that uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. The exhibit has been displayed in other venues across the country, but will be augmented by regional artists for the exhibit here. Because of its accessibility and reproducibility, activists have long used print art as a communication tool in struggles for freedom and social equality. The bold graphic qualities made possible by printmaking techniques are used to communicate with and educate broad audiences all over the world.

The Graphic Works of Leon Pescheret
September 6 – October 13

Leon Pescheret was a noted artist, interior designer and printmaker who lived in Whitewater for over thirty years. While the interior design business was his mainstay career, his printed works were much in demand and he was an award-winning artist who often lectured about art around the country. Some of the works will come from the University Collection while local and regional collectors will provide others.
The Leon Pescheret exhibit in the Crossman Gallery has been a popular destination for students, faculty and community members, and as a result, several new works have been added to the show. The Taft Family of Whitewater contributed three prints to the exhibit; two are Wisconsin scenes and the third depicts a Southern mansion framed by live oaks with hanging Spanish moss. All three are large format color etchings. In addition to these new works, several original printing plates have been brought in to the gallery.
These printing plates will be available for view during a print demonstration that will take place on Wednesday evening, September 26th at 6 pm in the gallery. During the demonstration, gallery director Michael Flanagan and art student Bradley Corso will explain the process of producing an etching and printing an intaglio print, the process that Leon Pescheret employed. The gallery is also offering this event as an opportunity for anyone to bring in other Pescheret material that they would like to share with visitors between 6-8 pm.

Whitewater Home-Coming
This exhibit will feature artifacts, images and memorabilia associated with the City of Whitewater to highlight the celebration of the 100th Year Anniversary of the 1907 Homecoming. The Home-Coming Festival of 1907 was a major event for Whitewater that commemorated the 70th anniversary of the town’s first settlement. Lasting four days (July 4 - 7, 1907), the festival featured “exercises” (speeches and other pagentry), dances, a parade, balloon ascensions, baseball games, a lawn ornamentation contest, and a water fight between two crews of firefighters, among other things.
The festival was the brainchild of Normal School President Albert Salisbury, who had returned to his previous home in Brodhead, Wisconsin, where he had been Superintendent of Schools, and witnessed that town’s Home-Coming celebration. Duly inspired, he returned to Whitewater determined to mark the town’s 100th anniversary with such an event. He placed an open letter in the newspaper on August 6, 1906, inviting interested citizens to convene for the purpose of “deciding whether such a festival shall be undertaken.”
