For those who are interested in the relationship between Edward Said’s classic work of cultural/ideological criticism Orientalism and Appiah’s Cosmopolitanism, there is a brief introduction at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orientalism_(book).
Apropos of yesterday’s conversation, it is interesting to note that Said discusses Richard Francis Burton in that work as well. Perhaps we can discuss whether Cosmopolitanism is meant as a response to Orientalism, or simply builds on Said’s argument in some way.
