I think the idea of the webcam is creepy. I definitely would not want a camera on me all the time. I don’t know why people would want to watch other people like that. I think it would be really boring to watch somebody watching TV, or playing on the computer and creepy if they are watching it for ‘intimate’ reasons. I think someone taping every single moment of their life for others to see is weird.
I agree that it is sad to see the way that some women present themselves. Women should not have to walk around half naked or watch other women flaunt themselves to feel excepted by guys. Girls should not have to worry about this and should just focus on being themselves.
This essay disliked how the media portrayed race. This essay helped bring this issue to my attention because I didn’t realize it was still a problem. Dyson uses the scenarios where the media blames African Americans for problems that can not be rightfully theirs. This is unprofessional and should not be happening. In the future, will this still be an issue?
This is an essay that most people would find uncomfortable to read. Harriet Johnson is a disabled women who meets Peter Singer, who publicly speaks of killing babies who are born with disabilities. Harriet obviously opposes this idea. I agree with Harriet; disabled babies should not be killed. Together, she and Peter discuss this issue publicly. Interestingly, Harriet does not hate Peter. He respects her and she respects him. I would find that very difficult to do. She is very brave, mature and successful. How would the world be different if every baby born with disabilities was killed?
David Brooks talks about America’s lack of diversity. He says that we are comfortable with staying around people like ourselves because community makes us happy. This makes sense and I agree that this is true. He strongly dislikes the fact that we are satisfied with isolating ourselves from people unlike us to be surrounded by people only similar to us. I think this depends on what kind of personality and beliefs you have. If you are outgoing, you will probably approach people different than you. He wants the reader to question their own thoughts on diversity and get us to care and be more diverse.
I found Catherine Newman’s perspective on marriage very interesting and I liked the points that she made. Even though she loves her partner she does not want want to marry him because she she does not want him to have power over her or be a possession to him; she wants to be equal with him. I think that if they have the same views, which they obviously do because they have been together for so long, if they got married, he wouldn’t make her feel like a possession. It doesn’t seem fair to her that she can marry Micheal but homosexuals can’t marry. Catherine doesn’t believe that being with only one person forever can be sexually satisfying. Also, by not being married, it is their choice to be together; because they want to be, not because they have to be. If she were married, she would feel trapped with her husband. However, because they have a child together, it makes more sense and is more important that they stay together. Basically, they already share the relationship of a married couple but without the title. I agree with the things she has to say but I still think that marriage is important.
