The following mission statement has been developed by the committee to support international education in the College:

College of Education
International Education Mission

The mission of international education in the College of Education is to encourage students, faculty, and staff to become members of an international community of educators who are committed to the development of human potential throughout the world. In providing a program of international education the College seeks to graduate students who will engage with and respect other cultures, be sensitive to commonalities and differences among and within cultures, and have the ability to understand multiple perspectives through reflective practice.

To accomplish this mission, we support a cohesive and dynamic approach to international programming in the College including:

•	Internships, field placements, practica and student teaching abroad
•	The enrollment and support of students from around the world
•	Faculty development and faculty exchange programs
•	Study abroad and travel study programs for students, faculty and staff
•	International program development and delivery methods
•	A curriculum rich in international and global content

You can also download a copy of the mission at: Mission

Dr. Joy Scott has proposed a program for student teaching in South Africa. Please download the file for the complete information. South Africa Program Proposal

You may also wish to view her blog on the program. You can find it at: http://blogs.uww.edu/facstaff/scottj/southafrica/

What follows here is a brief introduction:

The College of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has a strong commitment to international student-teacher exchange endeavors. On record are exchanges with the countries of Australia, Jamaica and Sweden. The idea of a possible international student-teacher exchange program in South Africa came about as a result of a July 2005 informal conversation between College of Education dean Dr. Jeffrey Barnett and Dr. Joy Scott, Assistant Professor of Educational Foundations. With knowledge that Professor Scott’s summer 2005 tour of South African primary and secondary schools also included meetings with education faculty at select universities, Dean Barnett inquired about whether she would investigate if the universities being visited might be interested in a student-teacher exchange with UW-Whitewater. As such, Professor Scott arranged meetings with education deans at two South African universities: the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa and the University of the Western Cape in the Cape Town area. The distance between the South African cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town by air is approximately three hours. The meetings culminated in the schools of education deans at both universities verbally articulating high interests in embarking upon such an exchange effort and working with Professor Scott on program development.
