I just came from Undergraduate Research Day in the Old Main Ballroom. The opening ceremony was attended by over 120 individuals and the awards ceremony by nearly as many. I was truly impressed by the quality and variety of the undergraduate research that was presented. The performances and visual art works were exciting and thought provoking. The posters were visually appealing and well explained by the researchers. Congratulations to the researchers and their faculty and staff mentors! I am proud of the work that is being done.

A reception honoring the contributions of UW-Whitewater women in leadership positions will be held to day at the Fern Young Terrace, from 1:00 to 2:15. Please come to the event to show your appreciation for the honorees.
On Tuesday, Madison’s poet laureate presented several works including her monologue about the lynching of Mary Turner at the Works in Progress Café in the Fern Young Terrace. We also hear two works by Erica Meier, UWW senior.
Yesterday, there was an opening event at the Fiskum Gallery in the UC, featuring art by Phenomenal Women. We were also treated to music, poetry, and readings.
Peter Pan will be presented this weekend. Since we will be out-of-town at an alumni event, we will be unable to attend the performance. Fortunately, we will have the opportunity to see the production at a dress rehearsal this evening.
Last night I had the opportunity to attend the 10th annual UW-Whitewater Darwin Day event. I missed the “World’s Largest Edible Tree of Life,” because I had earlier been in Elkhorn for the Walworth County Board’s recognition of the UW-Whitewater football team’s national championship. I’m told the tree was delicious!
We had a full house at the Hamilton Center for a lecture by Michael Novacek, senior vice president, provost, and curator of the American Museum of Natural History. Dr. Novacek traced 100-million years in our history, identifying 5 major extinction events and discussed patterns of extinction and threats to the ecosystem. In addition to UW-Whitewater students and faculty, there were students and faculty from UW-Parkside and Beloit College and from many high schools in the region. This event was part of a coordinated Wisconsin Darwin Day outreach program along with events at UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee.
Darwin Day 2009 will celebrate his 200th birthday.
On Saturday, January 19th, a reception was held for donors to the new James R. Connor University Center. I have attached some pictures from that reception.
Now that the second semester has begun, our students, faculty, and staff have begun to use the new UC. It is an open, inviting space that should serve us for many years. I urge you all to come to visit the new UC.
This week, our football team was recognized at several special events for earning the 2007 NCAA Division III Football Championship. Tuesday, they traveled to Madison and were recognized at the State Senate and State Assembly. A proclamation honoring them was adopted by each house. That evening, the Whitewater City Council honored them, and they received copies of resolutions read into the Congressional record in the U.S. Senate and in the U.S. House of Representatives. A representative from Senator Feingold’s office presented the Senate resolution, and a representative from Congresswoman Baldwin’s office presented the House of Representatives resolution. Kevin Brunner, city manager, presented keys to the City of Whitewater to the football team, Coach Leipold, Coach Perkins, Coach Berezowitz, and Justin Beaver. On Wednesday, Governor Jim Doyle, and his wife, Jessica, hosted a reception for the Warhawks at the Executive Residence. Governor and Mrs. Doyle had a chance to meet the players and coaches. The football team presented a championship hat and t-shirt, and a Warhawk jersey to Governor Doyle. Attached are pictures from this week’s celebrations.
On Monday, January 14, I had the unique opportunity to join Dean Chris Clements, Randy Marnocha, Don Zahn, Lois Smith, Bob Schramm, Ken Kramer, and Miron Construction supervisor, Marvin Hazelett, in witnessing the placement of the last I-beam of the College of Business and Economics Hyland building. This was yet another milestone in the final stages of the CoBE Building Project, and it was very exciting to participate. I thought you’d like to participate as well—by viewing the photographs taken that day.
I hope you are reinvigorated and excited as we enter the new year. Roni and I just returned from visiting our new granddaughter, Alison, and her parents out in Washington state. It was a thrill! Yesterday, I toured the new James R. Connor University Center. This new/remodeled building will transform the center of campus. The newly created spaces will enhance our sense of community and the building will become a gathering place. Our first event will be a reception for donors on January 19th, with the Grand Opening event scheduled for February 1st.
Next week, the National Champion Football Team has been invited to a reception at the Governor’s Residence. A fitting honor for their accomplishments.
Best wishes for a wonderful new year and a rewarding second semester!
Happy Holidays!
What a tremendous game. Congratulations to all the Warhawk players and coaches on an outstanding season. The game was fun to watch, even in the rain. Thanks to the Warhawk Pep Band and the Warhawk Spirit Squad and all the fans and supporters who attended the game. What a wonderful way to end the season!
