The 10th Annual Diversity Award Ceremony was held on November 12, at the State Capitol, Senate Parlor.

The Diversity Award is structured to recognize winning state agencies or UW campuses for their strong commitment to the recruitment, retention and promotion of a diverse classified workforce as measured by the creation of programs, initiatives, and practices.

The Ann Lydecker Educational Diversity Award is structured to recognize exceptional efforts made by University of Wisconsin campuses for their recruitment and retention of a diverse student and faculty workforce as evidenced by data showing improved outcomes.

Artist Tim Mayer’s work the Fallen Soldier’s Project will be on display at The Roberta A. Fiskum Art Gallery, located in the University Center. http://uc.uww.edu/fiskum/

In 2003 artist Tim Mayer began painting oil portraits of U.S. Service personnel who have lost their lives in the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. As this effort grew, Mr. Mayer formed the AFTH, and the making of these portraits became the Fallen Soldiers Project. The portraits from this project have played central roles in honor and memory ceremonies organized by Mr. Mayer and presented in the Capitol Rotunda in Madison, Wisconsin. http://www.artistsforthehumanities.org/

Letters from Home in the Young Auditorium at UWW

The Griffin Theatre Company will be performing this intense, emotional, heartfelt and honest story of men and women who have served their country in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are brought to life in Letters Home. Without politicizing, a powerful portrait of soldiers’ experiences is portrayed by ten gifted actors who provide a voice not just for the soldiers, but for other family members as well. Their diverse voices are united in the belief that the person standing beside you is more important than you are. Letters Home is inspired by The New York Times articles, The Things They Wrote and the subsequent HBO documentary, Last Letters Home

The Roberta A. Fiskum Art Gallery, located in the University Center, will be open from 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM before the game for the exhibit, Fallen Soldier’s Project sponsored by The Provost Office, Student Affairs, Registrar’s Office, and the Center for Students with Disabilities.

The Silver Bracelet of the Lost B-17 Squadron

This is a serendipitous story that is 65 years in the making and still growing. It’s the legacy of Jim Weiler’s B-17 pilot graduation silver bracelet. It was lost in the wreckage after Jim was shot down in the worst loss of life by U.S. airmen in a combat mission over Czechoslovakia on August 29th, 1944. An entire squadron of B-17’s and more were lost. It traces in detail the efforts to return the bracelet from behind the iron curtain, the many lives it touched along the way and the curious history it has gathered along the way. We’ll see new images from the fateful mission and the enduring efforts to remember the legacy of B-17 veterans by villagers of a grateful Czech nation. The story finishes with the reunion of two shot down fliers from opposite sides of the Aug. 29th battle shaking hands as friends 63 years later.

Todd Weiler is Jim Weiler’s nephew and as a result of researching this story has been elected to Historian for the 2nd Bombardment Group of the B-17 veterans organization. The program lasts about 45-60 minutes with a PowerPoint show and memorabilia. Hope you will enjoy hearing and seeing the Story of the Silver Bracelet.
