Dawn Hunter, College Advisory Board Member, wins regional art award
(WHITEWATER – September 25) Dawn Hunter, a resident of Whitewater and board member of the Whitewater Arts Alliance, recently won an award at the Wisconsin Regional Arts Program for her watercolor collage that was exhibited at Crossman Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater this summer.
“Most of the people in Whitewater know that Dawn is a fabulous volunteer for the Whitewater Arts Alliance, and a great leader and community organizer. In addition to all of that, she is a wonderful artist and we at the Alliance congratulate Dawn on this recognition of her fine talent,” said Roni Telfer, president of the Whitewater Arts Alliance.
Dawn was the inspiration and leadership behind the creation of the Cultural Arts Center, a refurbished historical building in what is often referred to as the ‘old library,’ She has taken the lead in many projects to benefit the Whitewater community, including the light pole art that has graced main street for the last several years. She coordinated the Cravath Lakefront Arch project that was dedicated in April. She recently chaired the very successful Wisconsin Folk Art – Miracles of the Spirit exhibit, which brought more than 750 people from across the United States to Whitewater’s Cultural Arts Center.
Congratulations Dawn, and thanks for all you do!
Advisory Board Notes September 2008
It is hard to believe that the school year begins this week! Freshmen have arrived eager to see what the future holds, and Seniors have started that emotional “oh wow – I’m going to graduate!” roller coaster.
Do you remember what it was like coming to campus for the first time? It’s electric – there is a sense of energy that is hard to define – and amazing to be a part of.
Fall 2008 Meeting Date
The meeting will be Friday, October 3rd, from 10-3 and we will begin at 10:00 in the Kachel Center.
Good news!
· We have a new scholarship for the college - board member Francine Pease has endowed the Francine L. Pease Arts and Communication Scholarship that will serve each of the departments. Thank you Francine!
· Our 6th annual Midsummer Golf Outing raised over $6,000 this year! One of the things we are thrilled to do with the proceeds from this event is match board member Joe Dorman’s lunch sponsorship, to start funding for the Communication Department’s Student Ambassador Program. Thank you Joe!
· Our college received nearly $180,000 in grants this year, including $38,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). That is the most we have ever received in grants, and the first time we have ever received grants from the NEA.
· The Theatre/Dance department produced the world premiere of Stuck, a play by alumnus Neal Haven. After they opened at UW-W, they took the show to Milwaukee and re-staged it – it was a great opportunity for our students to perform in front of a Milwaukee audience.
· Senior Kristen Baus received the Gaarder Award, which is given to the most promising senior in Music Education in the state of Wisconsin. Kristen is the 11th of our students to receive this recognition in the 21 years it has been awarded.
· The Women of Metal: Innovation, Connection and Education exhibit will be in the Crossman Gallery from September 9 – October 18. Women of Metal is an exhibition of artwork by first and second generation women jewelers and metalsmiths who have a professional and educational relationship to metals as an arts discipline in Wisconsin.
· UWW has been recognized for its recycling efforts in the demolition of three former residence halls.
See you on October 3rd –
I do hope you can join us on October 3rd. We are excited about what the year holds and you are part of it. You can RSVP online at http://www.uww.edu/cac/advancement/rsvp.html.

One of our grads and his orchestra
Watch this great video of a high school orchestra that alumnus Ryan Ellefsen directs! Ryan received a Music Ed - Instrumental degree from UW-W in 2000 and is the Director of Bands and Orchestras at Chapel Hill High School. The soloist is one of his high school students. Pretty amazing - Bravo Ryan!
Faculty Awards

Classical Music and Charisma
I get a weekly blog from Andrew Taylor, called “The Artful Manager”. This week he has a video of a gentleman by the name of Benjamin Zander, discussing classical music.
It is a great video! I wish I could have all my students watch this as we talk about engaging an audience for the arts - in fact, I probably will. Take a look if you have time, and even if classical music isn’t interesting to you yet - all it takes is 20 minutes.

NOT ALOOF AND DETACHED, BUT DEEPLY, DEEPLY HUMAN…
This one time, at band camp (okay, orchestra camp), I got to watch a slightly crazy and wildly gesticulating individual convince a roomful of young musicians that their power and calling was more than just learning to play well. That slightly crazy man is still at it, and still showing us all how to connect exceptional art to everyday life.

UW-W Baseball earns trip to College World Series - a fourth trip!
UW-W Softball team finishes the season 39-11, the second highest victory total in school history. The finish equals the school’s best finish in the NCAA III tournament, also accomplished in 1986.
A bit of what we’ve been doing this semester
Our UWW Dance students did well again this year at the American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) conference, with two pieces being chosen for the Gala Concert!
The Art Department had an “iron pour” that they opened to the community in late winter. Student Megan LaPointe (a Weiser Scholarship recipient) coordinated the event, which was a great way for the community to connect with our College. My kids had two pieces poured, which was a unique arts experience that they won’t soon forget. I love it when our students have a great idea and make it happen!
Four music students produced a new jazz CD, “Sax Sounds” that explores contemporary jazz artists like Dana Wilson, Steven Galante and Jacob Veldhuis. Producing the CD gives these students knowledge and practical techniques they don’t normally get in the classroom - another example of hands-on learning that we stress in our college.
Play Expo was organized this year by the Game and Interactive media design program. PlayExpo is a juried show of interactive and animated creative work held annually in the University Center at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. Entries are accepted from all Big 10 states and the states which border Wisconsin.
Communication Dept Faculty Ann Knabe
Communication Department faculty Ann Knabe and her family were recently featured on WUWM (a local NPR station) in a story about military families.
The story starts…”Lt. Col. Ann Knabe lives with her husband and two little girls in Waterford, a small town in southeast Wisconsin. She was deployed twice in 2006 and spent most of that year away from her family. Col. Knabe was based in Southwest Asia with the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing. The unit flew missions into Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa….” Click on the link above to hear the story.
