Diversity

Posted by frankbe11 in New Student Seminar

YouTube Preview Image  Diversity is everywhere in the world around us today.  It has even become more common in the United States.  The United States is full of many differnt types of races such as caucasions, African Americans, Asians, Mexicans, and many other differnt types of people.  Without diversity this country would be very boring.  Diversity helps present different types of cultures and traditions to everyone.  All of the differnt ethnic and race groups have thier own unique contributions such as the way they dress, the different holidays that they celebrate, the religions that they practice, the foods that they eat, the languages that they speak, and many other cultural factors.  By having all of these factors present in the United States, we get to learn about the different cultures that are present in other countries and in other continents.  If we didn’t have these factors present, nobody would be different, every body would be pretty much be the exact same.  And where is the fun in that?  Culture is a major part of life, and it makes things interesting.  That is why people go to visit other countries.  They usually go to try the different kinds of foods, see the different kinds of sites which can obviously not be seen in the U.S., and just to experience the different atmosphere of living.  By visiting the different countries we learn a lot about the culture and that can be a life changing experience.  All of the different cultures and traditions have an impact on us even if we do not notice it.  Diversity helps us accept our own cultures and the cultures around us becuase without different cultures, our life would not be the same.  WE are all individuals in this world, and have the right to remain different from everyone else.

Favorite Brands and Slogans

Posted by frankbe11 in New Student Seminar

YouTube Preview ImageI have favorite brands in a few different areas, such as cereal, jeans, and items that i use everyday such as pencils.  I like to eat name brand cereal, such as Lucky Charms, Trix, and Froot Loops.  I always choose brand names like these over the generic ones that are offered at the stores.  I like to choose them because the quality of the cereal is better and it usually doesn’t get soggy right away like the generic cereal does.  The cereals are also better known, since they are advertised more.  The commercials that they have on T.V. help persuade me to buy the products because they have catchy sayings, which makes me that the cereal is better than the generic brands.   I also have certain types of brand name jeans that I like to wear.  Since I wea jeans alot, I like to pick a brand that is comfortable and that I know will last a long time.  I like to buy bullhead jeans and decree jeans because since I have been wearing them I have realized that the fit the same everytime and when I go to buy new pairs, the fit is the same as the last ones I bought.  I like to choose a brand name that I can trust and one that will last a long time, so I know that I am not wasting my money.  The last object that I am also picky about is the brand of pencils that I buy.  I always buy the BIC pencils because I have been using them so much that I have figured out they are a better quality than the cheaper ones that you can buy at Walmart.  I like BIC because I know that the erasers of the pencils actually work and the lead is a little bit thicker than other pencils, so it doesn’t break as easily.  Once I figure out the brands that I like I keep buying them, because to me they seem like a good quality product compared to the other brands that I tried that didn’t quite work out.

EMU Class Company

Posted by frankbe11 in New Student Seminar

The name that we picked for our Bed and Breakfast Company was “Starry Night Escape”.  We picked this name because we wanted our Bed and Breakfast to be a five star business and this name sounded kind of fancy.  This business is also going to be located in the quiet parts of the big cities, so that people can get their privacy and not be bothered.  So that is where we got the name Starry Night Escape.  The different services that we will be offering are there will be private cabins that customers can get with either 2 or 3 bedrooms and they come with a kitchen and living area, there will be luxurious suites which contain either 1 bedroom with a whirlpool, 2 bedroom with a whirlpool and fireplace, and all of these suites come with a living area, and basic bedrooms will also be offered which can be either a 1 bedroom with a king bed or 1 bedroom with 2 queen beds.  We have chosen four main groups of people to target to come to our bed and breakfast. The four main groups are wealthy people, honeymooners, business people, and celebrities.  We chose wealthy people because they will have the money to afford a nice, five star place to stay at.  We chose honeymooners because they most likely will want privacy away from everybody and are looking for a nice place to stay.  The business people will also like that our bed and breakfast is in a quiet place so that they can get their work done without being bothered and celebrities were also one of our targets because they too will have the money to afford us and our bed and breakfast will respect their privacy and won’t let anyone bother them, such as the papparazzi.

My College Transition

Posted by frankbe11 in New Student Seminar

My transition into college has been going fairly well.  I am now finally used to living with many other people and sharing a bathroom and showering area with other people.  I have also been doing pretty well with my classes.  It took me a couple of weeks to get the hang of collge.  I have learned that I actually need to do my homework to succeed in college.  I must not slack in my classes because otherwise I will fall behind.  By going to my classes, I have figured out that I must study a couple of hours per week so that I will do good on my exams and quizzes.  I have become even more responsible since transitioning to college.  I have learned all the responsibilities that I expect from myself, such as: doing all of my homework, studying for tests, keeping all of my stuff organized, and taking good care of myself.  I have learned that I can only rely myself to get my stuff done.  The only main thing that I need to work on now is my really bad habit of procrastination.  I think that overcoming this habit will help me become more successful in all of classes, so then I do not fall behind.  I think that being in college for a couple of weeks now has really helped me mature.  I have learned that I am the only responsible for my homework, and no one else can do it for me.  I have been able to get up for all of my classes on time and I have not skipped any of my classes.  I think that my overall college transition has been very successful.

Issues with Drug and Alcohol Abuse..

Posted by frankbe11 in New Student Seminar

College is the main time where most people will first try drugs and alcohol.  These types of things become popular because there is no parent supervision, so people start to think that they can just do whatever they feel like, even if it is illegal.  They start to form the illusion in their head that doing these types of things is the new so called version of “being cool”.  But sometimes college students don’t realize the consequences that can happen from participating in these activities. By drinking and doing drugs, students can start falling behind in their classes by not doing their homework and they may also start not showing up to class.  Students sometimes don’t know how to make the best decisions because they are being pressured by their friends to try these new activities, and since they don’t want their friends to make fun of them, they automatically give in.  When these students are drinking and the cops become involved, everyone automatically only fends for ownselves.  I have been a witness to something like this that happened.  Everyone ditched the person who was in definite need of medical attention because they were all too scared of getting caught.  They just left their friend there to fend for himself.  This shows how irresponsible people can become when they have alcohol or drugs in their system.  No one can clearly think straight, and this can cause them to do stupid things that they could later regret in their lifetime.  But what college students need to learn is that they can still have fun without drugs and alcohol.  They just don’t seem to realize it.  The only thing that drugs and alcohol does is make a person become more outgoing in their own mindset, but sometimes it can be for the worst.

My College Transition

Posted by frankbe11 in New Student Seminar

My college transition to Whitewater was quite the experience.  I went from going to a small school of 200 students to a college of over 10,000 students.  But this is a good transition for me because I used to be shy in high school and now I have to chance to be more outgoing to meet new people.  I also had to go through the transition of becoming more dependent on myself and not other people. I learned to be my own person now, and make my own decisions that nobody can make for me. I am learning to become more responsible, so that I can manage my time wisely to finish homework, study for tests, and do other activities that could benefit me in the future.  I must also make smarter and more responsible decisions, such as choosing not to do something that could me into trouble in the long run.  By coming to college, I have been learning how to get along with many different types of people and accepting them for who they are.  My transition into college so far has taught me not to be judgemental about other people, I have also had to learn to live in a dorm hall with many other people, which is quite different than being at home.  It has taught me to respect others and to be courtious to them.  Moving into the dorms has taught me that I cannnot just think of myself, I must also think of other people and what types of things they may get annoyed or bothered by.
