Anything you can do, I can do better

One of the newest trends that is quickly becoming popular in many Midwest retailers is the idea of menswear, for women. Let’s face it ladies, men’s clothing is way more comfortable than women’s, and often more inexpensive! Sometimes though it can be hard to incorporate menswear pieces into your wardrobe without looking like a total frump, but with simple accessories (that you probably already have) you can easily create a put together outfit.

Men's Wrangler shirt from Walmart $14.00

The first piece that is absolutely essential to perfecting this trend is the men’s button down shirt. These shirts usually look best in light colors on women, and are also great for spring and summer. Most menswear button downs run for $30-$60 but since structure isn’t really a large concern when wearing it as a woman so cheaper ones can be found at retailers such as Wal-Mart.

Once you have this essential piece, it is important to accessorize. Big, chunky belts and large bangles would work perfectly. Other ways to layer this piece is with menswear vests and blazers, which have been very dominant on the runways.

Another great menswear piece is the boyfriend jean.  These jeans are most importantly comfortable, and give you a great relaxed look. Cuff up the bottoms to give them a more summery feel. The fit with these can vary so find one that fits your body type best.  Pair them with a cut pair of strappy sandals or ballet flats to keep the look feminine.

Just remember accessories are key, go make this look your own!

Dress to Impress

With summer quickly approaching there is one piece that is a necessity in every wardrobe; a dress. Dresses are in my opinion one of the best clothing items ever because it’s just one piece that makes a whole outfit, and there are plenty of different styles to fit every body type. Some popular styles this season include;

  • Empire
  • Floral
  • Maxi
  • One shouldered
  • Cut out
  • Belted
  • The little black dress

These style can be dressed up or down which makes them very versatile.  Plus, summer dresses are typically light weight making them usually inexpensive from most retailers.

The empire waist dress is great for curvier body types. The structure of this dress contains a waist band that hits you at the smallest part of your torso. This will create a tiny waist and give anyone a great hourglass shape.

Beware though, this style is not for the short of stature, the length of the dress may actually make you look shorter! Make sure to find on that is perfect for your height.

The asymmetrical, one shouldered dress is often very Greek inspired, but can have a modern look to it as well. Braided straps and necklines,

It pairs simple silhouettes with bold cut out shapes sure to make you look sexy while showing off a little extra skin.

Belted dresses come in a variety of different styles, but they are great way to give shape to any dress. Plus it’s also a great way to accessorize!

Finally, a MUST HAVE in any woman’s wardrobe is the little black dress. With this piece, choose the style that best fits your body type. The LBD is great for any season and can be worn almost anywhere. Make sure you look rocking in it so it can become your go-to piece!

Ahoy Mateys!

A change in the seasons is always inevitable, and so is a change in style. A great trend that carries well from spring into summer is the Nautical look. This trend has been around for decades and seems to remain a summer classic. Much inspiration for this seafaring trend came from classic naval uniforms. The nautical trend is characterized by;

  • A color pallet of red, white, and navy blue
  • Crisp stripes
  • Boating paraphernalia;  anchors, sails, ropes, ect.

As with any trend, the key to making this one work is by keeping it simple. You want to hint at the idea of looking nautical, rather than come out looking like an actual sailor!

A key piece in any nautical wardrobe is a pair of white pants. White pants a clean and classic; the epitome of the nautical trend. Because white pants really leave nothing to hide, you may want to splurge on this item when searching for the perfect fit. When shopping for white pants look for something with a wider trouser style leg. This balance out the bold colors/stripes on your top half and create a great leg line making you look long and lean. White linen pants also work for this look plus, they are lightweight making them great for summer! (and they’re super comfy )

When searching for tops look for stick to the color pallet! Many of these can be simple, inexpensive color block t-shirts.

Follow the pattern of bold stripes and colors. However if you feel like you may come out looking like and American flag, add a splash of yellow. Try something with an anchor pattern or a fitted blazer with large brass buttons.

Now, if you’re still not sure if this trend is for you, try to incorporate it into your style through your accessories. This is an inexpensive way to bring the sea to your wardrobe. Go for some anchor earrings, a charm necklace with a long gold chain, or a rope bracelet or belt. Seashell jewelry is also a nice twist on this style.

You are ready to set sail just remember, keep it simple so you don’t go OVERBOARD!
